SCOUTING THE LEATHERNECKS
Western Illinois is 13-28 overall with a 3-13 mark in the Summit League. The Leathernecks defeated Southern Utah on April 8 to record their first league win of the year. They also took two games from North Dakota State in the following series.
Western Illinois has two players hitting over .300 this season. Dan Dispensa is the team leader at .344 (52-for-151). He has 10 doubles, two triples and two home runs giving him 21 RBI's on the year. Austin Cowen is the other Leatherneck hitting over .300. Cowen is close behind Dispensa with an average of .342 (53-for-155). He leads the team with 34 RBI's.
Ryan Cowhey and Matt Igara join Dispensa and Cowen as the only Leathernecks to start in all 42 games. Cowhey leads the team in doubles with 11 and in stolen bases with 22. Igara is a home run threat as he leads the club with three.
The Western Illinois pitching rotation has been consistent all year long. Rich Mascheri and Dan Russell share the lowest ERA on the team at 3.72. Mascheri will take the hill on Friday afternoon. He owns an overall record of 1-7. The lefty leads the team in innings pitched at 67.2. He is second on the team in strikeouts with 57. Russell will get the nod on Sunday. He is 3-4 on the year with 29 strikeouts.
The strikeout leader for the Leathernecks is Dustin Hunter. Hunter is scheduled to throw game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The right-hander has 78 strikeouts in his 60 innings of work. Rounding out the weekend rotation is freshman Nick Smith. Smith holds a record of 3-5 on the mound. He has one complete game under his belt and is third on the team with 52 strikeouts.
