Home Runs Lift ‘Dons Past Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. -- IPFW was able to split the weekend series against Western Illinois with an 8-5 win over the Leathernecks on Sunday afternoon. Carter DeBoe had a huge impact on the game with two home runs helping the Mastodons improve to 15-33 on the year.
IPFW faced a 2-0 deficit after the first inning, but Mike Mugg quickly cut into that margin with his first home run of the season. Mugg walked to the plate with two outs, but managed to get the Mastodons on the scoreboard with a deep shot to centerfield.
DeBoe gave IPFW a 3-2 edge in the third with a two-run home run to right field. He stayed hot from the plate for the remainder of the game. The sophomore from Holland, Mich. singled in the fifth inning and homered again in the seventh inning after a Western Illinois pitching change. DeBoe leads the team with eight home runs on the season.
The duo of Steve Danielak and Travis Reboulet got the job done on the mound for IPFW. Reboulet threw the first four innings and was replaced after giving up four earned runs. Danielak picked up his fifth win of the year by keeping the Leathernecks off balance for the final five innings of the game. Danielak limited Western Illinois to just three hits which resulted in one run. He walked two, but struck out six to earn the win.
DeBoe led the charge offensively with a 3-for-4 performance from the plate. He scored three runs and posted four RBI's. Mugg and Danielak also ended the day with two hits.
IPFW will now look ahead to their next game which will be played on Tuesday, May 8 at Parkview Field against the No. 5 Purdue Boilermakers. Tickets will be available at the gate for $5. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
