Men’s Tennis with Three Matches this Weekend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's tennis team will play two Summit League opponents before ending the weekend with a home match against the Detroit Titans. The Mastodons will play at IUPUI on Friday April 12 and then host Kansas City on Saturday, April 13 at 2 p.m. The match against the Kangaroos has been moved inside to the Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Center due to weather conditions.
ABOUT IPFW (7-12, 1-0)
The Mastodons went 2-1 last weekend, picking up 6-1 wins over both Omaha and Dayton before falling 3-4 to Northern Illinois on Sunday. The Mastodons earned their first Summit League win of the year by defeating the Mavericks and are now entering the home stretch of the schedule with four league matches remaining.
Daniel Kang holds down the top spot on the IPFW lineup in singles competition. The junior is 5-5 in his last 10 matches, moving his overall record to 8-11. Kang joins Joao Freitas as the top doubles team on the roster. The tandem have won three-straight and are now 11-7 overall.
Andres Cobos and Freitas have each reached the 10 win plateau in singles action. Cobos is 10-9 competing at both No. 2 and No. 3 and Freitas is 10-8 playing in the No. 4-5 range.
Connor Andrews and Martin Muadi have been solid at No. 2 Doubles for IPFW all season long. The duo is 10-8 after going 5-5 in their last 10.
SCOUTING IUPUI (4-16, 1-2)
The Jaguars are 1-2 in the Summit League with an overall record of 4-16. They have three matches remaining during the 2013 regular season, all of which will be played at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis.
IUPUI has won two of their last three by defeating Marian (Ind.) and Omaha each by the final score of 6-1. DePaul broke the winning streak with a 6-1 victory over the Jags on Saturday, April 6.
IUPUI took two very tough losses in league competition as March came to a close. The Jaguars lost 3-4 to South Dakota State at the Kansas City cluster and then took another 3-4 loss to the host school on Sunday.
Jason Jaruvang is the top player for IUPUI posting a 9-9 record in No. 1 Singles. He lost his most recent match, but has gone 8-2 in his last 10. Jaruvang pairs with Jake Hedderig to form the most successful tandem on the roster. The duo is 8-4 overall at the No. 3 slot. Playing No. 1 Doubles on Friday will be the team of Jacob Bradley and Nick Volz who own a record of 6-7.
SCOUTING KANSAS CITY (10-10, 4-0)
Kansas City will be playing for a Summit League regular season championship this weekend when they face the Mastodons as they enter the final weekend of their season with a 4-0 record in Summit League competition. The Kangaroos will play Goshen College on Friday before facing IPFW on Saturday, April 13.
UMKC moved to 2-0 in the league with wins over South Dakota State (4-0) and IUPUI (4-3) in late March. The Roos made it to 3-0 with a 7-0 sweep over Western Illinois and they most recently swept Omaha on the road 5-0 on April 10. The team is now 10-10 overall after winning their last four matches of the season.
Grant Fleming and Tomas Patino each have 16 wins for Kansas City in singles competition. Fleming has played a majority of his matches at the No. 3 level and Patino makes the Kangaroos a tough battle as he plays primarily at No. 4. The team of Fleming and Patino work together as the No. 1 Doubles team for UMKC. The duo is 11-5 overall at the top spot.
Nino Hasandedic has been at the top spot for most of the year for Kansas City. Hasandedic is 8-6 at No. 1 Singles and 3-0 at the No. 2 spot.
SCOUTING DETROIT (5-12, 1-4)
The Titans are 5-12 overall with a 1-4 record in the Horizon League. Detroit recently broke up a four-match losing streak by defeating Valparaiso 4-3.
Rafael Orantes has the best record on the team in singles play, posting a 10-6 record towards the bottom of the lineup. Splitting time at the No. 1 spot is Alex Latosinsky who is 3-9 overall and Mike Basha who is 2-2, but moves to 1-8 at the No. 2 spot. Basha and Latosinsky are on a two-match winning streak moving their overall doubles record to 7-7.
