Men’s Tennis at Valparaiso before Summit League Cluster

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's tennis team will face Valparaiso on Thursday, April 18 at 1 p.m. EST before entering the final weekend of the regular season. The Mastodons will face South Dakota State on Saturday, April 20 and then end the Summit League cluster with a match against host school Western Illinois on Sunday, April 21.
ABOUT IPFW (7-15, 1-2 SL)
The Mastodons are 7-15 overall after losing their last four matches. The team won two of three during the first weekend of April, including a 6-1 victory over Omaha to record their first Summit League victory of the season. Northern Illinois edged the team 4-3 to end the weekend and three more losses followed.
IUPUI defeated IPFW 4-2 in Indianapolis and then Kansas City took a 4-2 win over IPFW at the Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Club. The Mastodons ended the weekend with a 5-2 loss vs. Detroit at the Dr. Rudy and Rhonda Kachmann Tennis Center.
Andres Cobos has the best singles record on the team at 11-11. Cobos primarily plays No. 3 Singles, but has seen time at the No. 2 spot. The sophomore has played with three different teammates in doubles competition, posting a season record of 8-13.
Connor Andrews and Martin Muadi had a good weekend with three doubles victories to improve their overall record to 13-8. The duo is now 7-3 in their last 10 playing at the No. 2 spot. Joao Freitas and Daniel Kang have a 12-9 record at No. 1 Doubles and Kang also serves as the No. 1 Singles player on the team. Kang is 9-13 overall at the top spot with a 1-2 record against Summit League foes.
ABOUT VALPARAISO (10-11)
The Crusaders only have two matches left on the schedule before the start of the 2013 Horizon League Championship which will be held in Indianapolis. Valparaiso will face IPFW on Thursday and then end the regular season with a Saturday match at UIC. The team is 11-10 overall, but 0-5 in league play. They have lost three-straight heading into Thursday's match.
The Crusaders are 6-2 at home compared to 0-8 on the road. The match against IPFW was moved to a 1 p.m. start as the teams have decided to play indoors.
Eric Honert and Chris Baum are two of the top players on the roster. Honert plays at No. 1 Singles and is 10-11 overall while Baum is the No. 2 man with an 8-13 record. The Crusaders can take points at No. 3 and No. 4 Singles as Michael Savaglio and Michael Baiocchi have solid overall records. Savaglio is 8-13 at No. 3 and Baiocchi is 10-10 at No. 4.
Honert teams with Lucas Waak to form the No. 1 Doubles team for Valparaiso. The tandem have lost three straight, but are 7-12 overall. Chris Baum and Danny Oakes play at No. 2 and the team of Baiocchi and Savaglio are 11-9 at No. 3.
ABOUT SOUTH DAKOTA STATE (9-10, 2-1 SL)
South Dakota State recently improved to 2-1 in Summit League competition with a 4-1 win over Omaha on April 13. The team is 9-10 overall with two league matches left on the schedule. The Jackrabbits will face Western Illinois on Friday, April 19 before playing IPFW on Saturday.
SDSU kicked off league play with a 4-0 loss at Kansas City on March 22. They followed that performance up with a 4-3 win against IUPUI the next day. Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, the Jacks are currently on a three-match winning streak defeating Chicago State 7-0, North Dakota 6-1 and Omaha 4-1.
Parker Lawley and Mateus Moreira have each recorded over 10 wins during singles competition, but Andrea Boglic plays primarily at the No. 1 position with an overall record 6-9. Lawley is usually penciled in at No. 3 and Moreira has the most time at No. 2. The team of Lawley and Boglic are 7-4 at No. 1 Doubles which includes a 1-1 mark in league play. Moreira plays alongside James Thorp at No. 2 and the Pereira's are 6-2 at the No. 3 spot.
ABOUT WESTERN ILLINOIS (8-15, 2-1 SL)
The Leathernecks will host the final Summit League cluster of the year as the Mastodons will take on Western Illinois a day after playing South Dakota State. WIU is 8-15 overall, but improved their Summit League record to 2-1 with a huge 4-3 win over IUPUI on Sunday, April 14. The Leathernecks dropped the doubles point, but came back to win four of the six singles points to take the match over the Jaguars. The win snapped a seven-match losing streak that began on Feb. 23.
The No. 1 Singles position has been a tough spot for Western Illinois all year as the team is 5-18 overall. Christoph Haertel and Bradley Holt each have two wins at the top spot while Ben Yue adds one. The middle to bottom part of the lineup is where the Leathernecks have earned points as the team is 10-13 at No. 5 and 9-14 at No. 4.
There is no clear order to the doubles format at Western Illinois as multiple players switch partners looking for the right combination.
