ABOUT IPFW
The IPFW Mastodon women's soccer squad returned 14 players who started at least two matches a season ago, including players who scored 10 of the team's 12 goals last year. Under first-year head coach Jason Burr, the Mastodons look to improve on their 6-12-1 record from 2013.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
IPFW finished its non-conference slate with a 2-8-0 record and have posted a 0-4-2 record through its Summit League schedule with just two games left to play in the regular season—both on the road. The defense has been solid away from Hefner Field, particularly through the middle part of the season. The best performance came in their Summit League opener at South Dakota where they held the conference's best offense scoreless through 85 minutes before giving up a late goal in a 1-0 heartbreaking loss. The offense will look to get back on track as the front line was unable to net a goal it its three games after exploding for three and one against South Dakota State and IUPUI, respectively, in the two preceding games before the recent drought. Overall, the Mastodons have been a tale of two teams during conference play, with the defense playing strong one game while the offense struggles and vice versa, so the focus over the last two games will be to turn in a complete effort on both sides of the ball.
Underclassmen have been leading the way for the 'Dons this year as freshman Kallianne Mogler and sophomore Mayson Whitman are turning in impressive campaigns in their young careers. Mogler currently leads the team in assists (4) and points (8) in addition to co-leading the team in goals (2) with Whitman,Rachel Good, Taylor Pavlika and Lindsey Swope. Whitman is also second on the team with two assists and six total points—all but one assist coming in the last six games. Overall, the Mastodons have spread the wealth on the offensive side of the ball, with five different players scoring at least two goals and 10 players registering at least one point on the year.
Pavlika, a third-year keeper for the 'Dons, continues to improve her numbers in the net each game. She's recorded a 2.28 goals-against-average and a Summit League-best and single-season career high 106 saves in 2014. The mark breaks her record of 103, which she set as a sophomore in 2013. With three saves on Friday night at Omaha, the junior now has 290 career saves—good for second in program history—and needs just five to break the all-time record of 294.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Denver posted a 4-5-1 record during its non-conference slate and has gone 4-2-0 in Summit League play with the conference schedule wrapping up over the next week. After dropping two of its first three league games, the Pioneers have won their last three with grind-it-out 1-0 wins over Omaha at home and IUPUI and North Dakota State on the road, respectively.
The Pioneers have been balanced on the offensive side of the ball with six different players scoring at least two goals on the year and two of those six scoring at least three. Those two are freshman midfielder Jocelyn Loomis and senior forward Anna Willis, who have also added a combined three assists on the year. In her first season of collegiate soccer, the midfielder sits atop the team statistical rankings with eight total points in 2014, in addition to co-leading the team in goals and assists. Overall, the Pioneers have spread the wealth in the attack with 14 different players have recorded at least one point on the year as Denver is sixth in the league in goals per game.
While the offense has been solid, it's the defense—particularly the goalkeeping tandem of Tina Vargas and Cassidy Rey—-that has carried the team this season. Vargas and Cassidy have split time In the net this season for the Pioneers, with Rey getting the edge in minutes played with 804. A junior and sophomore, respectively, Vargas and Rey have combined for a 1.26 goals-against-average—which is good for third in the Summit League. While the two have only collected 43 total saves on the year—last in the conference—the number serves as more of a reflection of the impressive play of the Denver back-line and its ability to limit shots on goal by opposing offenses.
Denver is under the direction of head coach Jeff Hooker, who is in his 23rd season at the helm of the PIoneers. He currently owns an impressive 313-113-39 overall record as his 23rd season comes to a close.
