SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
IPFW finished its non-conference slate with a 2-8-0 record and have posted a 0-5-2 record in its Summit League schedule heading into its last game of the season on the road at Oral Roberts. While the defense and offense has been inconsistent in 2014, both sides of the ball have turned in solid performances at different points of the season. Prior to Sunday's 3-0 loss at Denver, the defense had its best stretch of the season as they allowed only two goals in three games. The back line's best performance on the year, however, came in their Summit League opener, where they held the conference's best offense scoreless through 85 minutes before giving up a late goal in a 1-0 heartbreaking loss. The offense has struggled at times, but has proven that they can break out at any moment as they exploded for six, three and two goals at different points season.
Underclassmen have been leading the way for the 'Dons this year as freshman Kallianne Mogler and sophomore Mayson Whitman are turning in impressive campaigns in their young careers. Mogler currently leads the team in assists (4) and points (8) in addition to co-leading the team in goals (2) with Whitman, Rachel Good, Taylor Pavlika and Lindsey Swope. Whitman is also second on the team with two assists and six total points—all but one assist coming in the last six games. Overall, the Mastodons have spread the wealth on the offensive side of the ball, with five different players scoring at least two goals and 10 players registering at least one point on the year.
Sam Pavlika, a third-year keeper for the 'Dons, has recorded a 2.37 goals-against-average and a Summit League-best 111 saves in 2014. The mark also breaks her single-season career record of 103, which she set as a sophomore in 2013. With five saves on Sunday at Denver, the junior now has 295 saves in her career, breaking the previous IPFW women's soccer record of 294 career saves.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Oral Roberts posted a 1-5-3 record during its non-conference slate and has gone 2-4-0 in Summit League play with the conference schedule wrapping up on Sunday. After dropping its first two league games, the Golden Ealges won two of three in the middle of conference play before losing its last two in close 1-0 contests against South Dakota and North Dakota State, respectively. Outside of a 3-0 loss to South Dakota State, the margin in every other league game for Oral Roberts hasn't been more than one goal.
The Golden Eagles' offense has been led by the trio of Ashley Martin, Amanda Dial and Maria Stordhal, who have combined for seven of the team's 12 goals on the year. Martin, a junior midfielder, leads the way with three goals on the year while Dial and Stordhal have two a piece. Five others have scored one goal each, while Stordhal and midfielder Madison Valenzuela have accounted for six—three a piece—of the team's 11 assists in 2014.
Oral Roberts has employed a two-keeper tandem in goal this year as redshirt junior Helen Erb and sophomore Anissa Arenas have split time in the net for the Golden Eagles in 2014. In 11 games played, Erb has recorded a 1.37 goals-against-average with 50 saves. She currently ranks fifth in the Summit League in save percentage (.781), goals against (14) and goals against average (1.37). Her counterpart, Arenas, has played in eight games and registered a 2.09 goals-against-average with 32 saves.
Oral Roberts is under the direction of head coach Roger Bush, who is in just his second season at the helm of the Golden Eagles. In his first season in Tulsa he led the team to a 15-4-1 record and a second place finish in the Southland Conference.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Mastodons and the Golden Eagles have met five times overall, with Oral Roberts holding a 4-0-1 advantage in the series history. The sixth meeting this weekend, however, will be the first between the two schools as members of the Summit League as the Golden Eagles are in their first year as members of the conference.
