Men's Tennis Falls in Battle with Broncos

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - IPFW and Western Michigan battled the entire way through both the singles and doubles lineup; however, the Broncos out-lasted the Mastodons in a 5-2 WMU victory.
The loss snaps IPFW's four-match win streak; however, the Mastodons will get a chance to start up a new streak with a 9 a.m. battle with the Green Bay Phoenix tomorrow morning in Kalamazoo.
Western Michigan took the first match at No. 3 doubles by a 6-1 score, before Daniel Kang and Andres Cobos teamed up for a 6- win at No. 1 doubles. With the point riding on the final doubles match, the four players needed extra points, before Western Michigan held on for a 6-5 (7-3) win.
Kang knotted the score quickly with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, tying the team score at one point apiece. Gerard Guell put the Mastodons ahead 2-1, as he defeated Michael Treis 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
The final four matches needed a third set each; however, each went to the Broncos.
Martin Muadi was lead his match at No. 5 singles in the third set 6-1, 4-6, 3-2 before having to retire because of injury, setting the team score back to 2-2. Jonathan Raa dropped a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 contest at No. 2 singles.
The match was clinched by the Broncos when Jim Beckwirth topped Andres Cobos 6-5 (8-6), 3-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. The longest match of the day came at No. 6 singles, where Matt Hamilton and Connor Andrews went into a tiebreaker in each of the first two sets, before Hamilton closed out late for a 5-6 (4-7), 6-5 (7-4), 6-4 win.
