FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team tied the program record for wins in a season, as the squad won by a 6-1 score over in-state rival IUPUI on Saturday afternoon.
The team's 12th win of the season ties the single-season record, as the team also improves to 3-0 in Summit League play this season.
"This was a great result today for our team," said assistant coach Brett Barnett. "We knew going in this would be a battle, and we did a great job of playing with energy and maintaining our composure for the whole match. We played great doubles at No. 1 and No. 3. Dan (Kang) beating the reigning Summit League Player of the Year stunned them a little bit and gave us a lift. Overall it was a big win, and we are excited to get to Omaha next week to keep our league run going."
IPFW's top doubles pair of Kang and Andres Cobos picked up an 8-1 win over their opponents from IUPUI, before Connor Andrews and Karl Wangensten-Oye won 8-4 at No. 3 to give the Mastodons the doubles point. Martin Muadi and Gerard Guell's match at No. 2 pairs was tied at six before it was stopped because of time constraints.
In singles, Kang topped Jaruvang – the defending Summit League Player of the Year - 6-4, 6-3 to put the Mastodons ahead 2-0, as Guell's 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 gave the 'Dons a three-point lead.
IUPUI answered with its only win of the day, a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles, cutting the gap to two at 3-1, before a 6-1, 6-3 win by Martin Muadi at No. 5 closed the door and kept the Mastodon undefeated league record intact.
Wins by Wangensten-Oye (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) at No. 6 and Cobos (6-3, 5-7, 10-4) at No. 2 put the icing on the cake in the 6-1 IPFW win.
The Mastodons host Valparaiso and Grace on Tuesday, April 1, before taking to the road the weekend after with matches at Omaha (April 4) and Creighton (April 5).
