
Quartet of Finalists Pace Mastodons at NKU Invitational

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Four players, Daniel Cardenas, Martin Muadi, Jonathan Raa and Karl Wangensten-Oye have each advanced to the finals of their respective flights for the IPFW men's tennis program, as the Mastodons closed the opening day of the NKU Invitational with strong performances.,
In all, IPFW went 11-5 in singles action on the day, and a perfect 4-0 in doubles matches.
In flight two, Cardenas, in his first tournament in a Mastodon uniform, picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mate Srdanovic of Lewis, before turning a marathon-match victory over Adrian Isache of Northern Kentucky by a 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) final score. Cardenas will face off against NKU's Christopher Angulo in the finals on Saturday. Also in the second flight, Carlos do Val picked up an opening-round win over Simon Yaram of Dayton by a,7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4) score, before falling to Angulo by a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) score in the semifinals.
Flight three has Muadi fighting for the individual title, as he won 6-4, 6-2 over Andy Fruffel of Dayton, before picking up a 6-7 (10-12), 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) win over Northern Kentucky's Balint Zsidai, and will see Zach Berry of Dayton in the finals. Tom Sizeland picked up a straight-set 6-4, 6-1 win over NKU's Jack Carney in the tournament quarterfinals, before dropping a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10) match to Berry.
The fourth flight sees Mastodons on both sides of the final, as teammates Raa and Wangensten-Oye will battle for the title as each went a perfect 2-0 leading up to the finals tomorrow. Raa won 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8) over Nick Lang of NKU before coming back with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Dayton's Colin Bernier. Wangensten-Oye topped NKU's Jason Dilly 6-1, 6-0 before shutting out Vincennes' Brennan Buchanan 6-0, 6-0 to advance the sophomores to the finals.
In what was one of the best singles matches of the day, IPFW's Gerard Guell - playing at the top flight - defeated Dayton's Carsten Fischer 7-6 (13-11), 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (10-4) in a match that took nearly two and a half hours to finish. Worn out from the marathon opener, Guell fell 6-4, 6-1 to Armand Levandi of Lewis in the semifinals. Andres Cobos fell -6 (7-3), 1-6, 1-0 (10-1) in the quarterfinals to Josh Malyon of Dayton, before stumbling 6-2, 6-3 in the back draw against Erik Aunapuu of Lewis.
The Mastodons swept through the doubles portions, with the 'Dons winning easily in each of their quarterfinal bouts. Guell and Muadi picked up an 8-4 win in the top flight over NKU's Mate Virag and Jordy Maginley, while Cobos and Cardenas won 8-2 over Dayton's Zach Berry and Kyle MacDonald.,
In flight two, Raa and Wangensten-Oye took an 8-1 win over Austin Hensley and Zach Mustin of Vincennes, while do Val and Sizeland had an 8-3 win over Balint Zsidai and Jason Dilly of NKU.,
The quartet of individuals and doubles teams still active will each battle for a flight title on Saturday afternoon at the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex.
