ABOUT IPFW
The IPFW Mastodon women's soccer squad returns 14 players who started at least two matches a season ago, including players who scored 10 of the team's 12 goals last year. Under first-year head coach Jason Burr, the Mastodons look to improve on their 6-12-1 record from 2013.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
IPFW is looking for its first road win of the season when they travel to Central Michigan on Friday afternoon. The Mastodons have been on a bit of rough stretch as they have gone winless since a 6-4 victory over Northern Kentucky on Sunday, August 31. The team turned in its best performance of the season on the defensive side of the ball in its most recent weekend opener against Valparaiso at home last Friday. The lady 'Dons held the Crusaders scoreless through 80 minutes, giving up a late goal as they eventually fell 1-0. The one goal allowed was a season-low, while the opening half shutout was a first for IPFW in 2014.
Forwards Kallianne Mogler and Rachel Good continue to be key the offensive attack up-front. The freshman and junior, respectively, are atop the statistical categories for the 'Dons. The pair is tied for the team lead in goals with two a piece, while Mogler is first in both assists (2) and points (6). The freshman has made a big impact early in her inaugural year of collegiate soccer, and IPFW will continue to look to her to create chances up front.
The Blue and White's offense also has its two leading scorers from 2013 in forward Andie Lazzerini (3G, 2A) and midfielder Gaby Romo (4G, 1A). The sophomore tandem has combined for one goal and one assist so far in 2014. In all, eight different Mastodons have registered at least one point in 2014.
Third-year goalkeeper Sam Pavlika has recorded a 3.67 goals-against-average with 48 saves in 2014. The junior collected 12 saves in two games over the weekend to move her career number to 232—now good for third in program history. She needs just 30 more to move into second all-time and is on pace to break the program record by the end of the season.
SCOUTING THE CHIPPEWAS
The Chippewas have gone 1-5-1 to open the first six week of the 2014 campaign, dropping their latest contest 3-1 to Colorado College on the road. Central Michigan returned seven starters among 18 letterwinners from a team that went 8-11-1 in 2013—the program's first losing season since 2007.
In 2014, the offense has been led by forward Laura Gosse, who has registered eight points on four goals—both good for the team lead heading into the matchup with the Mastodons. The senior led the Chippewas in goals both her sophomore and junior seasons and is just one shy of tying her season-high of five with a little over half of her final season remaining. Three other CMU players have accounted for goals in seven games, while six Chippewas have recorded at least one point. Fellow senior Emily Cooksey has also been a solid contributor in the midfield, accounting for one goal and one assist on the year.
Sophomore Maddy Bunnel has spent a majority of the season in the net for the Chippewas, posting a 2.22 goals-against-against average, 39 saves, and a .739 save percentage in 568.50 minutes. Fellow sophomore Heather Laeufer has started and played in one game as the goalkeeper with a 3.00 goals-against-average and 12 saves.
Central Michigan is under the direction of head coach Peter McGahey, who is in just his second season at the helm of the Chippewas. Prior to joining the Central Michigan women's soccer program, McGahey held a 74-21-13 record at Division II Minnesota State.
