Mastodons Take Down Loyola 2-1 in Sunday Matinee
9/21/2014 8:43:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW women's soccer team put together its most complete performance of the season to down the visiting Loyola of Chicago Ramblers 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The game was part of a double header at Hefner Field as the IPFW men's soccer team started the day with a 0-0 double overtime draw against Green Bay in the opener.
The home team used two first half goals just over a minute apart to take a 2-0 lead over the Ramblers (3-6-0) before halftime. As has been the theme in the offensive attack during the first nine games of the season, freshman forward Kallianne Mogler was responsible for keying both scores for the 'Dons (2-7-0). Mogler, working the ball up the right side of the field for much of the day, sent two perfect passes into the box that were buried in the back of the net to give the Blue and White its first lead in the opening period of a game in 2014. The first went to sophomore Mayson Whitman, who sent the ball with a powerful kick past the keeper into the upper right corner in the 26th minute. The second—in the 27th minute—was a cross to freshman Kassidy Simpkins that resulted in a perfectly placed ball past a sliding keeper to put the 'Dons up 2-0.
After the offense gave the Blue and White the lead heading into the second period, it was up to the defense to protect it. That is exactly what they did. Despite giving up a goal in the 55th minute to Ramblers' forward Valerie Gonyo, the Mastodons drew an offsides on what would have been the game-tying goal as the back line clamped down and fought off a furious attack by Loyola that brought intense pressure until the final whistle blew.
Third-year goalkeeper Sam Pavlika played her best game of the year in the net as she gave up a season-low one goal while collecting seven saves in the game.
The 'Dons registered a season-high 10 shots, with nine coming in the first half. While the home team was outshot 19-10 for the game, it was IPFW who used its toughness to pull out the win at home.
Whitman led all Mastodons with four shots in the game, followed by Simpkins with three. With two more assists on Sunday, Mogler now leads the team in both assists (4) and points (8) and shares the lead in goals as she and junior forward Rachel Good both have two on the season.
IPFW will conclude its non-conference schedule next Sunday, September 28 on the road at Indiana State. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
