ABOUT IPFW
The IPFW Mastodon women's soccer squad returns 14 players who started at least two matches a season ago, including players who scored 10 of the team's 12 goals last year. Under first-year head coach Jason Burr, the Mastodons look to improve on their 6-12-1 record from 2013.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
The Mastodons put on an offensive clinic en route to a 6-4 win over Northern Kentucky on Sunday, August 31 for the team's first victory of the 2014 season. It also marked the first time in program history the 'Dons had beaten the Norse after losses in the previous two matchups. IPFW's six goals in the game tied for the second-most all-time and the fifth time in school history the feat was accomplished. After getting shut out in the first two games of the young season, the offensive explosion was just what the team needed heading into a tough non-conference weekend ahead.
Five different lady 'Dons registered goals in Sunday's victory, led by two off the foot of forward Kallianne Mogler. The freshman also had a hand in a third goal, assisting on the game-tying header by Gaby Romo after IPFW faced a 1-0 deficit midway through the first half. Mogler ended the game with two-consecutive goals, which proved to be the difference in the game after the Norse scored four goals of their own. Junior Rachel Good, freshman Taylor Pavlika, and redshirt freshman Lindsey Swope also recorded goals in the game. Through three games, Mogler leads the way with five points, while seven others have tallied points for the Blue and White.
Veteran goalkeeper Sam Pavlika is beginning her third-year as the starting keeper for the 'Dons. The junior currently sits in fifth-place in career saves in program history, needing just three to move into fourth and 16 to overtake third place. Pavlika has collected 21 saves and registered a 3.32 goals-against-average through three games in 2014. She's on-pace to shatter the all-time career saves record of 294 before heading into her senior year next season.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
Michigan State enters Friday's contest unbeaten at 4-0-0 after recording three shutouts in its first four games of the 2014 campaign. The Spartans—who went 9-8-2 a year ago—return 26 letterwinners, including the leading point-getter and the leading scorer from 2013 in Allyson Krause and Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz, respectively. As a sophomore, Krause knocked in five goals and added four assists for 14 points on the year. Fiebernitz, a defender, posted a team-high six goals from her center-back position and was named a Second-Team All-Big Ten selection last season.
True freshman Jaime Cheslik worked her way into the starting lineup prior to the start of the 2014 season and has proven she belongs on the field in her first year of collegiate soccer. The forward has collected three goals and one assist through four games to lead the team with seven points. In Michigan State's most recent win this week over Oakland, Cheslik accounted for the game-winning goal to secure the 1-0 win and keep the team undefeated. Krause picked up right where she left off a year ago, registering one goal and three assists so far to follow Cheslik with five points.
As a team, the Spartans have scored eight goals on 40 shots, while allowing just one goal in 70 shots. The stout defense can be attributed to goalkeeper Courtney Clem. The fifth-year senior has started off her final season on a strong note, recording a 0.25 goals-against average, 26 saves and three shutouts. Clem has already earned the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor for two-consecutive weeks after helping Michigan State go 4-0 to start the season. It was the first time in two years a Spartan had received the award.
Michigan State is under the direction of Tom Saxton, who is entering his 24th season at the helm of the Spartans' women's soccer program. Saxton entered 2014 with a career record of 230-186-43 in 23 seasons in East Lansing.
