EAST LANSING, Mich. – A tough task awaited the IPFW women's soccer team on the road on Friday night in East Lansing as the Mastodons faced the unbeaten Spartans of Michigan State. A hot and humid evening at DeMartin Stadium slowed the step of both teams a bit in the first half, but it was the Spartans who weathered the early-game temperatures to take down the Mastodons 3-1.
For the third time in four games, IPFW's opponent took advantage of a slow start by the 'Dons to score in the first 10 minutes of the game. After a Mastodons foul, the Spartans were awarded with a free kick in front of the goal from 30 yards out. Junior defender Alexandra Gjonaj made a quick strike to the right corner of the net and MSU midfielder Sarah Kovan volleyed it out of the air past IPFW keeper Sam Pavlika to give the home team a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.
Michigan State extended its lead in the 16th minute as Gjonaj got in on the scoring after assisting on MSU's first goal. This time, the defender received a pass out in the flat from midfielder Allyson Krause, dribbled up the left sideline and made a move to beat IPFW's defender before sending it into the bottom left corner of the net from just inside the left boundary of the 18-yard box.
Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Mastodons came out with some intensity in the second period as the weather began to cool.
After Michigan State knocked in its third goal of the game off a corner kick six minutes into the second half, IPFW strung together a solid sequence in Michigan State's third of the field.
In a span of six minutes after going down 3-0, the Mastodons reeled off three shots and two corners as the team began to create dangerous chances in front of the MSU goal. Forward Kallianne Mogler—the team's leader in points coming into the game—was a driving force in the offensive attack in the second half. The freshman battled the stout Michigan State defense to start the sequence with a hard shot from 10-yards out that got blocked out-of-bounds by a Spartans defender. Two-consecutive corner kicks followed with another shot on goal.
While nothing came of the sequence, the relentlessness finally paid off in the 71st minute as junior Rachel Good took a pass off the foot of Mogler to the right of the 18-yard box. After a quick touch, Good launched the ball towards the goalie and it was just high enough to skim off her hands into the back of the net to ruin the MSU shutout.
Good and Mogler are tied for the team lead in goals with two a piece, while Mogler is first in assists (3) and points (6).
Despite being under siege most of the game, the defense held strong in front of Pavlika, clearing the ball several times on dangerous attacks by the Spartans' offense throughout the game. Pavlika, the 'Dons third-year starter in the net, played tough as the last line of defense, making six saves in the game to keep the final margin at 2. The junior now ranks fourth all-time on the career saves with 211.
The Blue and White finish up the weekend with another non-conference matchup on the road at Butler on Sunday, September 7th. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at the Butler Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind.
