ABOUT IPFW
The IPFW Mastodon women's soccer squad returns 14 players who started at least two matches a season ago, including players who scored 10 of the team's 12 goals last year. Under first-year head coach Jason Burr, the Mastodons look to improve on their 6-12-1 record from 2013.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
The Mastodons picked up its first win of the season in a 6-4 win at home over Northern Kentucky on Sunday, August 31. Five different lady 'Dons notched goals in the win, led by two off the foot of forward Kallianne Mogler to seal the game. The freshman also added an assist on the day. Mogler picked up right where she left off in a 3-1 loss at Michigan State on Friday, September 5, assisting junior Rachel Good on IPFW's goal in the second half that ruined the shutout for the Spartans.
Mogler has made an immediate impact in her first year of collegiate ball. She leads the team with three assists and six points total, while sharing the team lead in goals with Good with two. The 'Dons also have their two leading scorers back from a year ago in the sophomore tandem of Gaby Romo and Andie Lazzerini.
Veteran goalkeeper Sam Pavlika is in her third-year as the starting keeper for the 'Dons. On Friday, the junior recorded 6 saves against Michigan State to move into fourth place on the all-time career saves list. She needs just 15 more saves to move into third in program history. Pavlika has collected 27 saves and registered a 3.24 goals-against-average through four games in 2014. She's on-pace to shatter the all-time career saves record of 294 before heading into her senior year next season.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Butler posted an 11-7-2 overall record last year and returns 22 players from a squad that finished fifth in the Big East in 2013. Of those returning, the Bulldogs welcome back a large core of their offensive production from a year ago, as the trio of Sophia Maccagnone, Elise Kotsakis and McKenzie Muchow combined to account for 19 of the team's 36 goals last season. On the defensive end, the Bulldogs will look to replace the now-graduated Julie Burton in the goal. The task will be tough as Burton recorded 10 wins with a 0.94 goals-against-average in 2013.
The Bulldogs have opened the 2014 slate with a 1-3 record over the first five games, most recently suffering a 1-0 loss to Evansville on Friday, September 5. While the trio of attackers were the top performers heading into the season, it has been a couple of Butler defenders that have shined early in the season. Senior defender Kelly Mahoney is starting off her final campaign on a tear, scoring two goals and adding an assist to lead the team with five points while fellow defender Stephanie Kaylor has recorded four points on four assists.
In the race to replace Burton in the net, a pair of underclassmen have emerged in the competition. Sophomore Jayne Heinrich and freshman Madison Card have both seen time in the net and have registered similar numbers thus far. Heinrich has started three games while Card has been a starter in two. The keepers have combined to record a 1.55 goals-against-average with 17 saves on the year.
Butler is under the direction of co-head coaches Tari St. John and Rob Alman. St. John entered her ninth season at Butler with a 73-75-14 career record in eight seasons—all in Indianapolis. Alman joined the Bulldogs' staff five years ago and was elevated to co-head coach prior to the 2012 season. Entering his third season sharing head coaching responsibilities, he holds a 23-12-6 record.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Mastodons and the Bulldogs are facing off for the fourth-consecutive year and the ninth time overall. Butler leads the series 2-5-1, but the 'Dons have won or tied in three of the last six meetings.
