
Baseball Opens 2015 at Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The 2015 IPFW baseball season kicks off on Friday, February 13, when the team travels south to face off against the Alabama A&M Bulldogs in a four-game series with the schedule recently having been changed because of the liklihood of unfavorable weather on Sunday. The updated schedule has the teams facing off in a doubleheader on Friday, with two more games to play on Saturday.

SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
Leading the way for the IPFW returners in 2015 is junior outfiedler Evan VanSumeren, who batted .370 with 27 runs scored, laying down six sacrifice bunts and stealing four bases on the season. Two-time National Player of the Week Greg Kaiser also returns for the Mastodons after hitting eight home runs and leading the team with 38 RBI's. Shane Trevino drove in 37 runs, while doubling 11 times and scoring 25 runs.
The pitching staff is led by the return of Ryan Wells, who went 3-3 with a 4.81 ERA last season, striking out 71 batters in 73 innings of work. Zac Mishler went 3-2 on the season with 16 strikeouts in 33 innings of relief, while Dane Davis and Nate White also return after starting 13 and 11 games a year ago, respectively.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Alabama A&M come into the 2015 season after a program-record 21 wins in 2014, and return each of the team's 16 top hitters, including outfielder Andrew Utterback, who batted .398 a season ago with 42 RBI's and 28 runs scored. Austin Hulsey hit .356 on the year with 32 runs scored, five home runs and 37 runs driven in. Shortstop Julio Nunez returns after leading the team with 52 runs scored, 16 doubles, eight home runs and 45 runs driven in, while Bradyn crutcher led the team with 18 stolen bases and batted .321.
The pitching staff is led by the return of 12-game starter Devin Smith who went 4-7 with a 4.91 ERA, striking out a team-best 52 batters in 84.1 innings of work - also a team-best. Utterback led the team with three saves, striking out 10 batters of eight innings of work, as Ryan Ahrens also returns after striking out 45 batters in 60.1 innings, while walking 46.
