All nine Mastodon starters collected a hit on the day. The 'Dons were led by Avery Nelson who went 2-for-6 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. The sophomore belted her first career IPFW home run against Bowling Green and added a double against Indiana. Kelly Pevely and Morghyn Neal each collected a pair of hits on the day. Caitlyn DeLong scored a pair of runs to lead the Mastodons.
In the first game of the day, Bowling Green jumped out to an early lead with six runs in the top of the first. The Mastodons manufactured a run in the bottom half of the inning. Jenna Balthazor reached on a two-base error, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single up the middle by Neal.
IPFW added a run in the bottom of the second as Nelson took a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for her first career home run as a Mastodon. The Falcons answered with a leadoff home run in the top of the third before adding three more runs in the inning.
The 'Dons responded with another run in the bottom of the third. With one out, Neal reached on a BGSU error and advanced to second on a passed ball. DeLong later drew a walk and she scored on another Falcon error. Bowing Green scored two more runs in the top of the fourth on their third home run of the day.
The final Mastodon run came in the bottom of the fifth with one out. Emily Olszewski singled up the middle and Neal followed with a line drive through the right side. DeLong then doubled off the left field wall, scoring Olszewski from second. IPFW's rally stalled there as the final two outs were recorded, ending the game.
Sarah Lazarowich took the loss for the 'Dons, while Kaitlin Kowalski and Kaitlyn Biere each pitched in relief.
The nightcap saw the Hoosiers strike first with a run in bottom of the first. IPFW responded in the top of the second as Pevely delivered a one-out double off the left field fence. After a groundout, pinch runner Hailey Gukeisen scored from third on a Prestlee Cooper hard line drive off the Indiana pitcher.
IU added four runs in the second and another in the third. The Mastodons fought back in the fourth as DeLong cruised into second after a one-out shot to the wall that bounced off the Indiana left fielder's glove. With two outs, Nelson hit a line drive to the right-center gap, scoring DeLong from second.
The Hoosiers added a run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth to cap the scoring. Biere took the loss despite striking out a season-high four batters while throwing a complete game.
IPFW returns to action for a doubleheader at Ball State on March 18 with first pitch set for 2:30 p.m.
