
Muadi Sets Program Win Mark in Loss

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IPFW senior Martin Muadi set the IPFW men's tennis program career wins mark on Sunday morning, as the Mastodons fell in a split-venue doubleheader, falling 5-2 at home to the Cleveland State Vikings, before traveling to South Bend, Indiana, to take on the 36th ranked Fighting Irish, falling 6-1 to Notre Dame.
Muadi passes former teammate Daniel Kang for the top spot in the program singles wins mark with his 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles in the morning match.
In the morning match the Vikings ran up victories at No. 2 (6-2) and No. 3 (7-5) doubles, before the Mastodon team of Gerard Guell and Muadi picked up a 7-5 win at No. 1 pairs.
With the doubles point in hand, Cleveland State won the first four singles matches - three of which needed three sets - to clinch the match victory. Andres Cobos fell 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, before Guell fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1. The match was clinched at No. 3 singles where Carlos do Val rebounded from a 6-0 first set loss to take the second set 6-2 before falling in a 6-3 battle for the third set.
At No. 4 singles, Daniel Cardenas fell 6-2 in the opener, before also rebounding for a 6-4 win in the second set, before his opponent took over in the third set 6-2. Muadi's win at No. 5 singles gave the team its first win, as Karl Wangensten-Oye won in a long 7-6, 0-6, 1-0 (11-9) battle at No. 6 singles to give the match its 5-2 final score.
In the afternoon finale, a 6-1 loss to 36th ranked Notre Dame, the Mastodons scratched and clawed in doubles, falling by the narrowest of margins for the doubles point. The Mastodon No. 1 team of Guell and Muadi picked up a 6-4 win to kick off the pairs competition, before Cobos and Cardenas fought to a 7-5 loss at No. 2. At No. 3 doubles, the contest needed a tiebreaker to decide the outcome, with the Mastodon pair of Connor Andrews and Derek Romer falling 7-6 (8-6), with the Irish fighting off match point against the IPFW pair.
In singles, Guell fell to Quintin Monaghan, who came into the match ranked 22nd in the country in singles, falling 6-1, 6-2. Cobos fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, before do Val was toppled 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3.
Cardenas (No. 4) and Muadi (No. 5) fell 6-3, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-1, putting the Fighting Irish ahead 5-0. For the second straight match, and just hours after the first win of the day, Wangensten-Oye needed a third-set tiebreaker to decide the team point, with the IPFW sophomore holding out for a 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 1-0 (10-5) win, avoiding the sweep in the team scores.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, March 28 when the team hosts a doubleheader of Oral Roberts at 2 p.m. and Huntington at 6 p.m.
