FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team evened its record at 1-1 in Summit League play with a 5-2 come-from-behind win over the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles at Empowered Sports Club.
"This was an amazing singles effort today," said assistant coach Jonathan Batuello. "I was worried after doubles because the team was disappointed, and Oral Roberts was fired up. Our guys came out and built big leads early in singles to take the momentum. After that, they never let up and came away with an impressive win against a very good Oral Roberts team."
Oral Roberts jumped ahead behind an 8-5 wins at No. 3 and No. 1 pairs, to earn the doubles point, and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Andres Cobos won in straight sets at 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles to knot the score, before ORU won at No. 3 singles to lead 2-1 in the match.
From there the Mastodons dominated, winning the remaining four matches in straight sets, and knotted the match score at 2-2 following a Gerard Guell 6-2, 6-4 win at the top spot in the lineup. Daniel Cardenas followed to give the Mastodons the lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4, before Martin Muadi - who recently set the program's career singles wins record - won 6-4, 6-0 to secure the match win. Karl Wangensten-Oye added to the Mastodon success with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6, giving the match its 5-2 final score.
The squad returns to action on Friday, April 3 when the team hosts the Grace College Lancers at 4 p.m., before hosting Northern Illinois and Indiana Tech on Sunday, April 5.
