FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team splits its two Saturday matches, falling 6-1 to 42nd ranked Denver, before rebounding immediately after for a 7-0 win over Rose-Hulman on the team's "senior day".
"For a senior day in such a unique situation with our team, I am very proud of how we came out and competed," said assistant coach Jon Batuello. "Its bittersweet to have five seniors, but everyone playing their last season at IPFW. Against Denver we came out with great energy in doubles, had a great comeback to get the point, and then hung tough throughout singles against a ranked opponent. It set a good tone that continued in the win against Rose-Hulman."
In the opener, the Mastodons fought hard out of the gate, and rebounded from a loss at No.1 doubles to see Andres Cobos and Daniel Cardenas team up for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. The momentum continued through No. 3 pairs, where Connor Andrews and Derek Romer won in a tiebreaker to give IPFW the doubles point.
With the doubles win, Cobos became the program's all-time combined wins record holder, moving into first place after tying for the record a night earlier against Omaha.
In singles, the Pioneers swept the Mastodons; however, it was not without its share of excitement, as two of the matches needed a third set, including Gerard Guell against 107th ranked Henry Craig, as the Mastodon junior fell 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 1 singles.
Less than an hour after the completion of the match against Denver, the Mastodons were back out on the court for a non-conference battle with the Rose-Hulman Engineers, and IPFW made quick work of the foe, winning 7-0.
The No. 1 doubles team of Guell and Martin Muadi took an 8-1 win before IPFW secured the doubles point with an 8-2 win from Andrews and Romer at No. 2. The No. 3 pair of Cobos and Carlos do Val closed out the sweep with an 8-6 win.
In singles, Muadi closed out a 6-1, 6-1 win to put IPFW ahead 2-0, before Jonathan Raa won by an identical score, giving the hosts a 3-0 advantage.
The match was clinched with an Andres Cobos 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, as Daniel Cardenas finished just after with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3.
Andrews (6-3, 6-2) and do Val (6-4, 6-2) closed out the sweep for the Mastodons with wins at No. 5 and No. 2, respectively.
The Mastodons host a pair of Summit League foes on the coming weekend, the final regular season matches of the season, before hosting the Summit League Championships a weekend after.
