FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team gave up just 12 total games between singles and doubles, as the Mastodons toppled Western Illinois 7-0.
"This was a very solid match overall from the team," said IPFW assistant coach Jon Batuello. "To only drop 12 total games in a conference match is impressive, and puts us in a good position to play for the third seed in the Summit League Tournament."
The doubles portion of the match saw the Leathernecks earn five of their game victories. Derek Romer and Connor Andrews opened with an 8-1 win at No. 3 pairs, before Daniel Cardenas and Andres Cobos followed with an 8-2 win at No. 2 pairs. To close out the sweep, Martin Muadi and Gerard Guell picked up an 8-2 win at No. 1 pairs.
In singles, Cardenas got the first win by a 6-0, 6-1 score, before Karl Wangensten-Oye shut out his opponent by a 6-0, 6-0 count. The match was secured at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 Muadi victory.
Carlos do Val gave up just one game victory, winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, as Guell (6-1, 6-1) and Cobos (6-1, 6-3) won at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday, April 19, when the team hosts the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in the final match before the 2015 Summit League Championships.
