Mastodons Fall to Bison Comebacks, Drop 12-Inning Battle
5/2/2015 6:51:00 PM | Baseball
Seven IPFW players had multiple hits in the game, as Shane Trevino, Greg Kaiser, and Shannon Baker each went 3-for-6, with Kaiser driving in three. Brandon Soat, Evan VanSumeren, Kendall Whitman, and Jon Timmerman each picked up two hits in the game, as Soat, Whitman, Trevino, Kaiser, and Baker each scored twice. Kaiser's three RBI's led the team, as Whitman and Timmerman each had a pair of RBI's in the game.
The Mastodons wasted little time in jumping ahead for the game, as Soat opened the contest with a single, which was followed by a bunt single by VanSumeren. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, Trevino followed with an RBI single that scored Soat. A fly-out put a second out on the board, before Kaiser reached on a fielding error that scored Whitman, putting IPFW ahead 2-0.
Baker followed with an infield pop fly that three Bison players were near, but none were able to make the play, allowing Trevino to score, while an alert Kaiser saw that no one was covering home, and scampered to the plate to put IPFW ahead 4-0. After a Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece double to left field put runners on second and third, Timmerman singled home the remaining pair on base, putting IPFW ahead 6-0 after the top of the first inning.
A run in the fifth when Kaiser doubled home Brock Logan put IPFW ahead 7-0, before Whitman's fifth home run of the season scored himself and Soat, giving IPFW the 9-0 advantage after the top of the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth NDSU - after making a lineup change that switched out eight of the nine position players in the contest - scored two runs, before scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings, closing the gap to 9-8.
Trevino opened the top of the ninth inning with a single, was advanced on a groundout, and then scored on a Kaiser single, adding an important insurance run, as NDSU countered with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game into extra innings.
IPFW relief pitcher Jake Weber shut out the Bison in the bottom of the 10th and 11th innings, before IPFW went ahead again with a 12th inning-opening solo home run from Kaiser, before Soat doubled home Baker later in the inning, giving the hosts a 12-10 lead.
NDSU would not back down, and scored three runs in the bottom half of the 12th inning to secure the win in a four-hour and 19-minute game.
Ryan Wells started the game and ended with a no-decision as the senior lasted six innings, striking out seven batters and giving up two earned runs without a walk. Kyle Sorensen and Dane Davis came in for the seventh and eighth innings, before Weber pitched three and two-thirds of an inning in relief, striking out three but picking up the loss, dropping his record to 3-2 on the year.
The Mastodons return to the Newman Outdoor Field on Sunday for the third of three games in the series, a 2 p.m. ET first-pitch in the series finale.
