4/24/2016 4:55:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW fell behind 7-0 in the second inning as ORU scored four runs in the first inning and three more runs in the second. The Mastodons scored a run in the second inning, as well, and added four more runs in the third and another run in the fourth to make it a 7-6 contest through four innings. It remained a one-run game until the eighth inning when the Golden Eagles scored a run, and the visitors added six more runs in the ninth for the final eight-run margin.
In the second for IPFW, senior Grant Wilson (1-4) singled with one out and later scored on a run-scoring double to right center field by junior Jackson Boyce (1-4, RBI). In the third, redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (2-5, RBI) hit a solo home run to straight-away center field with one out, his team-leading 10th homer this season. Senior Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (1-4, RBI) added a run-scoring single that plated classmate Kendal Whitman (1-4), who walked, while Baker (2-4, 2 RBIs) contributed a two-run double to left center field that scored both Reece and redshirt-sophomore Brock Logan (1-5), who had also singled.
In the fourth, the Mastodons received a lead-off double to center field from Soat (4-6), who was promptly driven home by senior Greg Kaiser (2-5, RBI) with an RBI single.
Pease (1-2) started for IPFW and pitched the first 3.0 innings in defeat, allowing nine hits and seven runs, five earned, with four strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Adam Neal tossed the next 3.0 scoreless innings, yielding just one hit with one strikeout and one walk. Junior Jordan Martin tossed a shutout inning, as well, allowing no hits with one strikeout and one walk.  Redshirt-junior Jake Weber pitched 1.2 innings, yielding six hits and six runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Junior Mitchell Ley got the final out, but allowed two hits and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and no walks.
ORU was led offensively in the nightcap by Noah Cummings (3-5, 5 RBIs), who hit a three-run home run in the ninth, and Brent Williams (3-6, 3 RBIs), who had a solo homer in the ninth, while Trevor McCutchin (2-1) pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of middle relief for the mound win, scattering two hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
