IPFW Takes 10-0 Shutout Past Visiting IU South Bend
4/27/2016 7:03:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW scored 10 runs on 15 hits, as the game was called final in the bottom of the eighth inning, per the 10-run rule after seven innings. The Mastodons scored one run in the third, four runs in the fourth and five runs in the decisive eighth for their 20th win on the season. It marks the second consecutive 20-win campaign for IPFW, and the program's sixth 20-win season in 15 years of NCAA Division I competition … the third under head coach Bobby Pierce.
In the third, senior Brandon Soat (1-6) reached on a bunt single to the right side, advanced to second base when classmate Kendall Whitman (2-4, 2 RBIs) drew a walk, stole third base and crossed the plate via an RBI sacrifice fly to center field by Kaiser (2-4, 3 RBIs).
In the fourth, Boyce (3-5, RBI) provided a run-scoring single with one out that scored redshirt-freshman Alec Reuille (0-2), who had walked to open the at bat. Whitman followed with a two-out RBI single that plated Boyce, and both Soat and Whitman crossed the plate courtesy of a two-run double down the left field line by Kaiser … Soat had reached earlier on a fielder's choice play.
In the eighth, senior Grant Wilson (0-0) walked while pinch-hitting with one out and later scored on a wild pitch. Kellogg (3-5, 2 RBIs) contributed a two-run single that drove in both Reuille and redshirt-sophomore Isaiah White, who was pinch-running. Kellogg crossed the plate on a run-scoring double to left field by redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (2-3, RBI), who scored the 10th and final run via an RBI single by Whitman that ended the game.
Orwig (3-2) started for IPFW and pitched the first 6.0 scoreless innings for the mound win, scattering just three hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Junior Mitchell Ley tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings for the combined shutout by the Mastodons, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
Josh Rankert (0-1) started for IU South Bend and pitched the first 4.0 innings in defeat, allowing seven hits and five runs, all earned, with one strikeout and three walks.
