FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser and senior Brandon Soat each collected three hits on the day to lead IPFW to a Summit League baseball doubleheader split against Omaha Friday afternoon at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne. The host Mastodons (21-22, 6-14 Summit League) won the nightcap, 2-0, behind a strong mound effort from senior right-handed pitcher Trevor Storie, after falling in the opener, 3-1, against the visiting Mavericks (21-21, 11-9 Summit League). IPFW and Omaha will play the weekend series finale on Saturday morning, April 30, at 10 a.m. at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne.
In game two, IPFW and Omaha battled hitless and scoreless through five innings during an old fashioned pitching duel between starters Storie (5-5) and Sam Murphy (2-4). The Mavericks finally got the game's first hit in the sixth inning, a single to right field by Riley Herold (1-3), but he was stranded at second base.
The Mastodons also struck in the sixth, getting a lead-off walk from redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (0-1), who advanced to third base on a single by Soat (1-4). Senior Kendall Whitman (0-3, RBI) plated Baker with what proved to be the winning run via an RBI sacrifice fly to right field. Kaiser (1-3, RBI) promptly followed with a run-scoring double to right center field that scored Soat with an insurance run. It was Kaiser's team-best 14th double this season.
Storie took care of most of the rest for IPFW, pitching 7.2 shutout innings for his team-best fifth win this season, yielding just two hits with a season-high eight strikeouts and one walk. Redshirt-junior Jake Weber (8) gained his team-best eighth save on the season with the final 1.1 innings of the combined shutout, allowing no hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Murphy tossed 7.0 innings for Omaha in defeat, yielding two hits and two runs, both earned, with 10 strikeouts and two walks.
In game one, IPFW fell behind 2-0 through three innings before scoring a run in the sixth inning, but was unable to get any closer, as Omaha added an insurance run in the seventh inning. In the sixth, junior Jackson Boyce (1-3) singled with one out and advanced to third base on a single from Soat (2-4). Whitman (1-4, RBI) drove in Boyce with a run-scoring single.
Kaiser (2-4) and senior Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (2-4) each had two hits in the contest for the Mastodons, while Kaiser (12-12) added his team-best 12th stolen base on the season, as well.
Sophomore Evan Miller (4-5) started for IPFW and pitched the first 5.0 innings for the hard-luck setback, scattering four hits and two runs, both earned, with eight strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Adam Neal tossed a scoreless inning for the Mastodons, yielding one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. Junior Jordan Martin pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Damian Helm tossed the final 2.0 shutout innings, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Omaha was led offensively by Clayton Taylor (1-1, RBI), who hit a solo home run to right field in the third inning. Tyler Fox (8-2) started for the Mavericks and pitched the first 8.0 innings for the win, scattering seven hits and one run, earned, with four strikeouts and one walk. Eric Moreno (1) tossed the final 1.0 inning for the save, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
