IPFW Falls In Series Finale To Visiting Omaha 3-2
4/30/2016 1:40:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW scored a run in the first inning to take an early one-run advantage. Senior Brandon Soat (0-3) reached on a fielding error at second base, advanced to second on a single by classmate Kendall Whitman (1-5) and on to third base during a ground ball double play turned by Omaha. Trevino (1-3, RBI) followed with a clutch two-out RBI single that scored Soat.
Omaha pushed across lone runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 2-1 lead, but the Mastodons added another run in the eighth inning to tie it at 2-2. Redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser (1-4) led off the eighth with a double that bounced high off third base down the left field line. Trevino walked before a sacrifice bunt by redshirt-sophomore Brock Logan (0-3) advanced both runners into scoring position. Kaiser crossed the plate on a ground ball RBI from Valenzuela-Reece (2-4, RBI).
The Mavericks added the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning, getting a two-out RBI single from Alex Schultz (1-4, RBI) that scored Collin Leif (2-4, RBI), who had reached on an infield single with one out.
IPFW was almost able to tie it again in the bottom of the ninth, as Boyce (2-3) led off with an infield single to the pitcher and advanced two bases via a throwing error, and tried scoring from third on the play when the ball got away from the third baseman, but his head-first slide into home was not in time as the left fielder made the throw to the plate for the out.
Redshirt-senior Brandon Pease started for IPFW and pitched the first 4.0 scoreless innings, scattering two hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Junior Jordan Martin tossed 2.0 innings, allowing four hits and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Redshirt-sophomore Brandon Phelps pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding no hits with one strikeout and one walk. Weber (3-4) went the final 1.0 inning in defeat, allowing three hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and no walks.
Omaha also got two hits in the game from Clayton Taylor (2-4, RBI), while Corey Binger (6-3) pitched the final 5.0 innings for the Mavericks' mound win, scattering four hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.
