Mastodons Fall in Season Opener
2/11/2017 5:38:00 PM | Softball
ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Fort Wayne softball team had a tough outing to open their season as the Mastodons dropped both games of a double-header on Saturday (Feb. 11) against UIC and Detroit Mercy, 9-2 and 9-1, respectively.
In the first game of the day, Lauren Watson earned two hits in four plate appearances, while Sierra Miranda and Taylor Bolyard each drove in a run. Miranda batted in the first run of the Fort Wayne season in the sixth inning on a double to left, scoring Caitlyn DeLong. Bolyard followed with a fielder's choice, bringing in Miranda. Bailey Benefiel pitched a complete game, giving up nine runs, six earned, while walking two and striking out three.
Watson opened the game with a first-pitch single down the left field line. Amber Davis reached base on a fielder's choice, eventually getting to second following a Kelly Pevely walk. The top half of the inning saw both runners left on base following a strikeout.
The second inning would give the 'Dons more scoring chances following a hit-by-pitch and a Bolyard single up the middle. With two outs in the inning, Watson drove a single through the right side of the infield, loading the bases. Unfortunately for Fort Wayne, a force out to third would end the inning for the Mastodons.
Despite Sydney Windlan's three hits and a run scored, the 'Dons dropped the backend of the double-header against the Titans. Windlan finished 3 for 4, while Davis and Maria Palmegiani each added two hits. Elizabeth Snodgrass went four innings, giving up five runs and striking out three, while Olivia White threw three innings, giving up four runs, two earned, and striking out one.
Fort Wayne had an early scoring chance as Watson opened the second game with a single through the right side, eventually reaching second two batters later. Pevely advanced the runner to third with a single of her own, but the 'Dons left runners at the corners following a strikeout to end the first.
The Blue and White saw another scoring opportunity in the second inning as Palmegiani got on base with two outs. Kristen Zarate followed with a single up the middle, but the 'Dons would leave both on base after a groundout to third.
The Mastodons wrap up the Total Control Sports Invitational with a double-header on Sunday against Eastern Illinois and Loyola-Chicago. First pitch is scheduled for noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
