BROOKINGS, S.D. – Jake Weber threw six scoreless innings in a 1-0 (11 innings) loss for Fort Wayne baseball at South Dakota State on Friday (March 31).
Fort Wayne's best chances to score came in the first, sixth and seventh innings when they left two men on in each inning.
The game went to extras where Skyler Wenninger bunted in Landon Badger for the winning run. It nearly didn't get there as the Jackrabbits loaded the bases with one out in the eighth. But Brandon Phelps earned back-to-back strikeouts with the bases loaded to end the frame. Phelps finished with four scoreless innings of relief. He struck out six Jackrabbits.
Chris Halbur earned the win in relief for South Dakota State. He is 1-0. Dru Sebastian suffered the loss for Fort Wayne. He is 0-1.
Jackson Boyce finished with two hits and two walks for the 'Dons.
South Dakota State improves to 11-10 (4-3 Summit). The 'Dons fall to 5-18 (1-6 Summit). The two clubs will play game two of their three-game series on Saturday.
