Denny and Hanic Homer as 'Dons Split on Day Two
2/10/2018 10:22:00 PM | Softball
Five different 'Dons recorded two hits on the day. Morganne Denny led the way with a triple, home run and two runs scored. Stephanie Hanic also had two hits, including a home run and a double. Brooke Imel, Payton Hollis and Lexi Smalarz each recorded two hits.
The Mastodons got revenge on IUPUI after a one-run loss to the Jaguars a day earlier. Fort Wayne fell behind early when the Jags scored two runs in the bottom of the second on a double and a single. The 'Dons got on the scoreboard in the third when a run came home on a double play. A pair of freshmen Mastodons blasted off in the top of the fifth. Denny led off the inning by rocketing the second pitch she saw over the right field wall for her first collegiate home run. One batter later, Hanic follow suit, this time depositing the ball over the center field wall, also for her first collegiate home run. IUPUI got a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh, but the Mastodons held on of the comeback victory.
Bailey Benefiel started in the circle for the 'Dons, earning the complete game victory, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five.
In the nightcap, Loyola-Chicago scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the first, coming on a single and a two-run triple. Both of the Mastodon's runs came in the top of the fifth with two outs. After a single and an error, the Ramblers were called for obstruction, allowing Imel to score. Hollis followed with a sacrifice bunt, allowing Courtney Holm to score from third. Fort Wayne put the tying run on base in the seventh, moving her around to third, but was unable to bring her home.
In the circle, Addie Benham took the loss, throwing a complete game after surrendering three runs on six hits and striking out three.
Fort Wayne closes out the Total Control Sports Invitational tomorrow, February 11, when the Mastodons take on Wright State at 1:30 p.m. ET.
