Mastodons Drop Two Games on Opening Day

Maria Palmegiani led the 'Dons going 5-for-7 at the dish with two runs scored and an RBI. Stephanie Hanic and Morganne Denny each collected three hits on the day. Hanic led the team with three RBIs, while Payton Hollis collected a pair of RBIs. Lauren Watson led the team with three runs scored.
In the first game of the day the two former Summit League rivals battled back-and-forth. The Mastodons went up in first inning on an RBI single by Palmegiani. The Jaguars scored twice in the second, before Hanic tied the game on an RBI single to center in the third. The Mastodons added to their lead in the fourth on a double steal, an RBI groundout and an IUPUI error. The Jags scored four runs in the bottom of the six, three of which came with two outs.
Freshman Shaina Eyre threw a complete game, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out two in the loss.
In game two against EKU, the Colonels scored in the top of the first on a wild pitch. Fort Wayne answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Hanic again got things started by driving in two on a single to left-center and Hollis followed with a two-run double to left-center. Eastern Kentucky added two runs in the third, before the Mastodons again answered in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single from Courtney Holm. EKU scored a run in the fourth before taking the lead in the fifth on a two-run double.
Addie Benham started in the circle for the Mastodons, throwing four innings and allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out four in the no-decision. Demitra Burns came on to pitch the final three innings, suffering the loss after allowing two runs on two hits.
Fort Wayne returns to action tomorrow, February 10, when the 'Dons will have a rematch with IUPUI at 12:30 p.m. ET before facing off with Loyola-Chicago at 5:30 p.m.
