Baseball Picks Up Friday Night Win At Murray State
3/2/2018 10:00:00 PM | Baseball
The Mastodons fell behind 1-0 after a single Murray State run in the second. It would be the only run Fort Wayne starter Brandon Phelps would surrender. He struck out six and went 5.0 innings. He is now 2-0.
Fort Wayne went ahead for good with a four-spot in the sixth. Brady Hettinger opened the inning with a single. The bases were loaded after Brock Logan and Dylan Wilbert were hit with pitches. Murray State changed their pitcher, but it didn't help. Shannon Baker and Brandon Yoho followed with walks to make the score 2-1. Jacob Dickson and Robert Young III each followed with an RBI to make the score 4-1.
Young returned in the eighth to for two more RBI on a two-run home run to make the score 6-1. Fort Wayne pushed across an unearned run in the ninth to make it 7-1 going to the bottom half. The insurance runs would be vital as Murray State scored four runs in the ninth and had runners at first and third with one out. However Miller worked a fly out and a fielder's choice to end the game and secure the victory.
Baker scored a pair of runs for the 'Dons. Fort Wayne had only five hits in the game, but worked seven walks in addition to the two crucial hit by pitches. They stole two bases.
The 'Dons played error free baseball for the fourth consecutive game.
Fort Wayne improves to 3-4. Murray State is now 4-5. The two clubs will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
