Softball Sweeps Horizon League Foe Northern Kentucky

Demitra Burns and Courtney Holm led Fort Wayne on the day with four hits and two RBIs each. Burns also scored three runs. Maria Palmegiani, Morganne Denny, Sydney Windlan and Stephanie Hanic all recorded three hits on the day. Hanic led the team with three RBIs. Palmegiani and Denny each recorded three runs, two doubles, and two RBIs.
The Mastodons jumped out to the early lead in the first game. After a single by Burns in the second, she would score on a Holm double to left. NKU scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead, but Fort Wayne responded in the sixth. With one out, Burns doubled, scoring pinch-runner Brooke Imel all the way from first to tie the game.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, the 'Dons got the game-winning run on a double down the right field line by Denny. The Norse put the tying run on after a leadoff triple, but starting pitcher Bailey Benefiel retired the next three batters to preserve the win.
Benefiel earned her ninth victory of the season pitching a complete game. She surrendered two runs on seven hits, while striking out seven and not allowing a walk.
In game two, the Mastodons blew the door open in the top of the third, scoring seven runs on six hits. Windlan got the inning going with an RBI single. Denny followed with an RBI double, and after a walk to Palmegiani, Burns brought home a run on a single up the middle. Holm scored two runs on a single to left field and an NKU error. A single to right center by Hanic brought in one run, and Payton Hollis capped off the inning with an RBI double to center.
Fort Wayne added a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Palmegiani. The Norse got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a run, before adding another in the fifth.
In the sixth, Palmegiani doubled to right, scoring Denny. After a walk and a single loaded the bases, Hanic delivered a single to right field, scoring two runs. NKU picked up four runs in the bottom half of the inning to avoid the run rule.
Shaina Eyre secured her fourth win of the season in the circle, throwing six innings and allowing six runs, four earned, on nine hits and striking out two. Addie Benham came on to pitch a perfect seventh inning and record a strikeout.
Fort Wayne travels to Purdue for a non-league game on Wednesday, April 4, with a 4 p.m. first pitch.
