Morganne Denny, Lacey Wilzbacher and Lauren Watson each went 2-for-4 at the dish. Denny also drove in two runs while Watson scored twice. Brooke Imel led the 'Dons with four RBIs on the day. Maria Palmegiani and Stephanie Hanic each scored two runs, while Jenna Balthazor drove in two.
The Mastodons opened the scoring in the top of the first. After a leadoff walk by Watson, she would score on a single to right by Denny. The Bulldogs took the lead in the second on a three-run home run.
Fort Wayne wouldn't wait long to score, as the 'Dons batted around in the third, scoring seven runs on seven hits. Denny got the scoring started with an RBI single to center and Palmegiani followed with an RBI single to left. After Samford brought in a new pitcher, Hanic greeted her with a bunt single to load the bases. Imel followed with a walk, scoring pinch runner Sydney Windlan. Courtney Holm was hit by a pitch, allowing another Mastodon run to score. One out later Balthazor singled to center, scoring two 'Dons. The final run of the inning came on an RBI single by Wilzbacher, her second hit of the inning.
The Mastodons extended their lead in the sixth. With two outs, Denny walked, Palmegiani was hit and Hanic reached on an error. Imel stepped in a delivered her first triple of the season, scoring all three runs.
Samford added another three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but the 'Dons were able to record the final two outs to end the game.
Addie Benham started in the circle for the Mastodons, throwing two innings and allowing three runs on one hit in the no decision. Shaina Eyre earned the win after throwing three innings of relief to improve her record to 2-4 on the season. She allowed one run on three hits. Bailey Benefiel came on for the final two innings, surrendering three runs on four hits.
Fort Wayne travels to Jacksonville State for another non-league matchup tomorrow, March 7, at 3 p.m. ET.
