NDSU Pulls Away From Fort Wayne

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State used a four-run seventh inning to pull away from Fort Wayne on Friday (May 11) evening. The Bison won the series opener 7-2.
NDSU went up 2-0 with a pair of runs in the third inning. Fort Wayne cut the deficit in half the next half inning thanks to a bases loaded walk by Dylan Wilbert to score Mike Snyder.
It was a 3-1 game in the seventh when Shannon Baker doubled to left center, scoring Robert Young III. The 'Dons tried to tie the game on the play, but Snyder was thrown out at the plate to end the frame.
NDSU's four run seventh turned a one-run game at 3-2 into a 7-2 final. Carter Thompson recorded a 2-RBI single in the seventh.
Fort Wayne's best chance at a rally came in the ninth when Jack Lang and Young reached base. However they were stranded to end the game.
The game saw 18 combined hits between the two teams, but Baker's double was the only extra base hit in the contest.
Baker, Brady Hettinger and Lang each recorded three hits for the 'Dons.
Riley Johnson (5-6) earned the win for NDSU. He threw six innings. His teammate Chris Choles threw the final three innings to earn his second save of the year. Fort Wayne starter Brandon Phelps took the loss. He is 4-6 after tossing seven innings. Daune Miller threw a scoreless inning of relief.
Fort Wayne falls to 10-32 (6-19 Summit League). NDSU improves to 20-22 (10-13 Summit League). The series will continue tomorrow with a 2 p.m. start in Fargo.
