Emma Rafuse Opens 2018 With Butler Twilight Title

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne's Emma Rafuse used a time of 17:17.8, a minute better than the second place finisher, to win the Butler Twilight on Friday (Aug. 31). The 5K event was held at Northview Church.
Rafuse was the only runner to finish under 18 minutes. She led a Mastodon team that took fifth (112).
It is Rafuse's second career victory. She started 2017 with a win last season at the Valparaiso Crusader Open.
Hannah Aschliman was next best for the 'Dons on Friday, taking 17th with a time of 19:23.5. Rebecca Sippel (19:38.9) earned 21st. Sophia Hirzel (20:09.0) took 30th. Caitlyn Kiekhaefer (61st, 22:08.8), Emily Fuelling (66th, 23:26.7) and Bailie Brown (67th, 23:29.1) rounded out the squad.
Host Butler won the team title thanks to a score of 27.
The 'Dons return to action on Sept. 14 at Michigan State's Spartan Invitational.
