FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Men's track and field returned to Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday (Dec. 7), and the program saw seven records fall at the Mastodon Opener in the Lutheran Health Fieldhouse.
Freshman Luke Beehler jumped his way to a fifth-place overall finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.48m, setting the program record for the event. Bradon Gulch finished strong in the shotput and earned a first-place overall finish with a record-setting mark of 14.74m.
In the running events, five more 'Dons set new school records in their events. Braxton Trittipo finished second in the 300m (35.26) and seventh in the 60m dash final (7.10). Michael Oliver came in fourth in the 5K (15:31.26), Ben Marano took fourth in the 200m with a 23.25 and Nick Derickson finished 21st in the 600m, with a new record of 1:33.19.
The overall winner of the Mastodon Opener was cross-town foe Indiana Tech with 161 points. The Mastodons ended the day with a third-place team finish with 82 points.
"As a staff we could not be more proud of this track and field team. This was more than just a track meet to us. This competition was the culmination of countless hours of work by campus administration, athletics personnel, and the great student-athletes that choose to call Purdue Fort Wayne home. Today was simply the first step in building a championship program and we are excited to take many more this season.," says Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Alex Carradine.
The 'Dons will travel down the road to Indiana Tech next Saturday (Dec. 14) to compete at the Strive for Greatness Invitational Presented by Circle Logistics. Events will begin at 11 a.m.
