Morganne Denny was 2-for-2 at the dish, including a home run, while driving in a pair and scoring twice. Abby Baez finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Brooke Imel also went 2-for-3. Seven Mastodon starters collected at least one hit and scored a run against Western Carolina.
The Mastodons had a back-and-forth battle with the Catamounts. The 'Dons got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first when Denny connected on the team's first home run of the season, a solo shot to center.
Both teams brought out their bats in the fifth inning. Western Carolina scored five runs in the top of the fifth. The Mastodons answered back in the bottom half with six. Lauren Watson got things started with a bases loaded RBI single to left. Denny followed with an RBI walk and Baez doubled to left, scoring two more runs. Denny would score on a passed ball, before Sydney Windlan doubled to right center, scoring the final run.
WCU tied the game in the sixth, scoring two more runs. In the bottom of the seventh, the 'Dons got a leadoff walk to Windlan and a sacrifice bunt moved her to second. With two outs in the inning and with a 1-0 count on Lexi Smalarz, she would deliver on a double down the left field line, scoring Windlan from second and giving the Mastodons a walk-off victory.
Alyssa Malicki picked up her first collegiate victory, pitching a perfect 1 2-3 innings of relief. Shaina Eyre started in the circle, allowing seven runs, five earned, in 5 1-3 innings. She surrendered seven hits while recording a strikeout.
Purdue Fort Wayne is scheduled to return to action tomorrow, February 16, for a pair of games. The 'Dons will face UT Martin at 10:30 a.m. ET, followed by North Alabama 4 p.m. ET.
