Softball Tops Horizon League Member Oakland On Senior Day

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne softball played a pair of 4-3 games on Saturday (May 4) at the Purdue Fort Wayne Softball Field. The Mastodons fell to Ball State 4-3 in the opener and defeated Oakland by the same score. It was Senior Day for the Purdue Fort Wayne program. Sydney Windlan, Lacey Wilzbacher, and Lauren Watson were honored prior to the contest.
Game One
The Mastodons out-hit the Cardinals 8-4 in the contest. Rachel Everson had a pair of hits and a walk in the game.
The 'Dons went up 2-0 with a two-run first inning. Brooke Imel singled in Watson. Wilzbacher then came around on a throwing error. The lead didn't last long as Ball State responded with a pair in the top of the second to knot the game at two. The 'Dons scored in the bottom of the third when Alise Hale homered to left field. Again, Ball State responded the next half inning. This time it was a two-run home run by Kendall Fields.
It stayed 4-3 the rest of the way but the 'Dons earned chances, leaving runners on in each of the final innings including the bases loaded in the fifth.
Alyssa Malicki suffered the loss. She started and went 4.0 innings. Lauren McConnell tossed three hit-less innings to close out the game. Tieghan Morio earned the win and Alyssa Rothwell threw the final out to get the save for the Cardinals.
Game Two
It was another two-run first inning in game two. This time it was a two-run home run by Morganne Denny.
It was a 2-1 game in the sixth when Oakland tied the game at two. The bottom of the sixth saw the 'Dons go to work. Watson singled with one out and then came around to score on an Imel double. Imel then scored on a single by Denny. The insurance run paid off as Oakland plated one in the seventh.
Shaina Eyre picked up the win with 6.0 innings of work. Lauren McConnell received the save.
Purdue Fort Wayne has qualified for the 2019 Summit League Tournament and will be the No. 6 seed. The Mastodons will play No. 3 seed Western Illinois on Wednesday (May 8). The event is hosted by North Dakota State University.
