Softball Opens Summit League Tournament On Wednesday

FARGO, N.D. – Purdue Fort Wayne opens the 2019 Summit League Softball Tournament on Wednesday (May 8) evening. The sixth-seeded Mastodons will play third-seeded Western Illinois at 6:30 p.m. ET. North Dakota State is the host institution.

About the No. 6 Mastodons (9-37, 3-15 Summit): Lauren Watson enters the tournament as one of the hottest hitters in the league. Since the start of April she has had a hit in 15-of-17 games. The senior finished conference play hitting .344. She has reached base in 13 consecutive games. The 'Dons split a doubleheader on Saturday in non-league play. Alise Hale and Morganne Denny had home runs on the day. Shaina Eyre had the win in the circle for the 'Dons against Oakland. Lauren McConnell picked up the save in the contest.
About the No. 3 Leathernecks (20-19, 12-6 Summit): The Leathernecks have won nine consecutive games. Jasmine Lara is hitting .310 to lead the squad. Payton Abbott owns a .300 average but a team-best .927 OPS. Her 61 total bases lead the team. Emily Ira (13-6) has thrown 131.0 innings on the season with 15 complete games.
Meetings This Season: The Mastodons fell to Western Illinois 3-2, 5-4 and 9-3 in a three-game series in Macomb on April 26-27. The 5-4 contest was a heartbreaker with WIU rallying in the seventh with a pair of runs to top the Mastodons. Brooke Imel had four total hits in the first two games of the series.
You Again?: The Mastodons and Leathernecks met last season with the two teams sharing the same seeds as this year. The 'Dons defeated Western Illinois 9-3 to knock the Leathernecks out of the tournament. The Mastodons were knocked out of the tournament the next day with losses to South Dakota State and Omaha.
A Win And...: The opening round of the tournament is single elimination. A win and the 'Dons will play No. 2 seed South Dakota on Thursday (May 8) at 3:30 p.m. That round will start double-elimination play.
About The Venue: NDSU's Tharaldson Park recently went under a $2 million renovation. The facility now features a full artificial surface field.
