Scouting the Mastodons: Purdue Fort Wayne travels to Milwaukee with five wins in their last seven games. The 'Dons took 3-of-4 from Oakland last week in a series win that was powered by a 5-4 walkoff victory in game two. The 'Dons were down 4-0 after four innings and came back to win the contest. The 'Dons have played five one-run games this season, going 3-2 in the contests.
Scouting the Panthers: Friday's contest will be the first for Milwaukee at Franklin Field. They intended to play at the stadium in 2019 before construction delays pushed their first game to 2020. Well 2020 came and so did a global pandemic. Now the Panthers are set to open play at the 4,000 seat stadium that also hosts the independent team Milwaukee Milkmen. On the field, the Panthers didn't win a non-league game this season but own a pair of wins over UIC and one at Northern Kentucky in league play.
Series History: Milwaukee leads the series 5-3, with the most memorable contest between the two teams being the first ever meeting when the Panthers defeated the 'Dons 26-21 in Fort Wayne on April 6, 2005 (box score). The last time the two teams played was a four-game series March 25-27, 2011 in Fort Wayne which the Panthers and 'Dons split 2-2.
Zac Attack: Zac Baden was inserted into the starting lineup on March 7 against Youngstown State. In 21 at-bats he is hitting .381 with eight hits while walking five times. The sophomore second baseman has been on base in 7-of-9 games.
Robison Saves The Day: Ryan Robison picked up the win in the first game of the doubleheader over Oakland on March 20 and then earned the save in the nightcap. He has four saves on the season, best in the Horizon League and 14th in the nation.
Oh Myer: Jacob Myer is pitching like one of the best pitchers in the league. The junior college transfer from Milwaukee leads the league in ERA with a 1.61 mark over 28.0 innings.
J and J: Justin Miller ranks second in the league in opponent batting average (.162). Right behind Miller in third is Jacob Myer at .184.
Meep, Meep!: The Mastodons own a league best 26 stolen bases this year. They are 26-of-31 and rank 28th in the nation. Jack Lang leads the league with nine stolen bases.
How About Jack: Jack Lang ranks fourth in the league in hitting (.354). He has six multi-hit games this season and enters the weekend with an 11-game on-base streak.
Nearing 500: Head coach Doug Schreiber spent 18 seasons as the head coach at Purdue and is in his second season at Purdue Fort Wayne. He enters the weekend with 497 career victories.
Looking Ahead: The Mastodons host Northern Kentucky next week. The 'Dons will play a single game on Thursday (April 1) at Mastodon Field against the Norse and then a single game on Friday (April 2) at Parkview Field. The 'Dons and Norse will close out the series on Saturday (April 3) with a doubleheader.
