Mastodons Use Myer’s Gem to Earn Split With Youngstown State
3/7/2021 8:17:00 PM | Baseball
Game One – Mastodons 1, Penguins 0
Myer finished the contest allowing three hits and one walk while notching five strikeouts. The game was scheduled for seven innings and he went the distance for the shutout. He is 1-0 after earning the win. It is the first complete game shutout for a Mastodon pitcher since Damian Helm threw 7.0 shutout innings in an 11-0 win over Omaha on April 20, 2018.
Myer came up big when it mattered the most, stranding a runner in each of the final five innings. The sophomore from Milwaukee, Wisconsin had to be on point because his counterpoint was also dealing. YSU starter Jon Snyder tossed 6.0 innings of no-hit ball and fanned 12 in the process. The 'Dons did hang four walks on Snyder, and that helped chase Snyder before the start of the seventh. With Snyder out, the 'Dons opened the inning with back-to-back walks. Jack Lang delivered a sacrifice and moved the runners to second and third with one out. The 'Dons were now in a position to win the game without the benefit of a hit. Trenton Stoner had the first chance, but his ground ball turned into an out at the plate for the second out. Andrew Lawvere followed with a walk to load the bases. Aaron Chapman decided that one hit was all the 'Dons needed to get the win when he lined an 0-1 pitch to right center field for the game winning single.
Chad Coles took the loss for Youngstown State. He is 0-1. Snyder picked up a no-decision.
Game Two – Penguins 13, Mastodons 8
After game one nearly went to extras scoreless, game two had plenty of offense. However, it was Youngstown State benefiting early. The Penguins scored five in the second and three in the sixth to go up 8-1 after six innings. The final three innings saw 12 combined runs scored.
Robert Young III delivered a pinch-hit two-RBI single in the eighth to advance the 'Dons within a grand slam at 12-8. Youngstown State added one more in the ninth on a home run by Braeden O'Shaughnessy.
Trenton Stoner finished with a hit, walk, RBI and two runs scored off the bench. Justin Greene and Chapman each had two hits in the final game.
Michael Madura took the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) in 5.1 innings. He is now 0-2. Nick Perez started for YSU is now 1-0 after throwing six innings.
Jeff Wehler had three RBIs on three hits including a home run in the sixth inning. O'Shaughnessy finished with four hits.
Youngstown State is now 5-7 (3-1 Horizon). The 'Dons fall to 2-6 (1-3 Horizon). The Mastodons travel to Butler in non-league play this upcoming weekend.
