YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Purdue Fort Wayne head coach Doug Schreiber picked up his 500th career victory on Saturday (May 8) when the Mastodons rallied for a 3-1 game one extra inning victory. The 'Dons saw Youngstown State rally in game two for a 7-5 decision.
Game One – Purdue Fort Wayne 3, Youngstown State 1 (8 innings, game scheduled for 7 innings)
The Mastodons entered the seventh inning needing a run to tie it, and that is what they got. Trenton Stoner singled through the left side with one out on an 0-2 count. Garrett Maish came in to pinch run for Stoner. Maish then came home to tie the game on a double by Justin Greene.
Youngstown State opened the seventh with a single and used a bunt to get the winning run to second with one out. However, Mastodon starter Justin Miller was up to the challenge. He picked the runner off and then got a strikeout to end the inning.
The top of the eighth started with a leadoff double by Zac Baden. He was bunted to third and eventually scored on a wild pitch with two outs. Aaron Chapman added an RBI-double down the left field line to make the score 3-1 later in the inning.
Miller started the eighth and got a strikeout on the first pitch. However, after he walked the next batter, Miller was lifted for Cameron Boyd. The senior needed just five pitches to get a pair of outs and pick up the save.
Miller allowed one run on five hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. He is now 4-6. Boyd's save is his first of the season and second of his career.
Gary Clift Jr. got the loss and is now 2-3 after entering in the seventh trying to get the save.
It was the Mastodons' first extra inning game since a 5-4 defeat in 11 innings at North Dakota State on April 5, 2019.
Game Two - Youngstown State 7, Purdue Fort Wayne 5 (game scheduled for 7 innings)
Youngstown State scored one in the second and two in the third to go up 3-0.
A Chapman groundout in the fourth made it a 3-1 game, scoring Garett Lake. Jack Lang singled in Baden in the fifth to push the deficit to one at 3-2. The sixth saw the 'Dons score three runs. Chapman scored on a wild throw off a Stoner bunt. Ryan Robison then added a pinch hit double to knock in Stoner and Greene. It made the score 5-3.
However, the 5-3 lead did not last. Youngstown State scored four in the bottom of the sixth to go up 7-5. The Penguins scored the four runs without the benefit of an extra base hit, recording four singles in the inning.
Purdue Fort Wayne put a pair on in the seventh but couldn't get them home.
Stoner finished with three hits. Chapman and Greene each had two hits. Blaze Glenn had three hits for Youngstown State.
Jacob Myer went 5.0 innings, allowing three runs with four strikeouts. He earned a no-decision. Boyd took the loss in relief. He falls to 0-6. Chad Coles is now 2-2 after throwing two scoreless innings for the Penguins.
