'Dons March Off Penguins in Game One

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Mastodon baseball team earned a split against Youngstown State on Sunday (March 20) with a walk-off victory in game one. Purdue Fort Wayne won the opener 8-7 on a two-out single by Ben Higgins to score Dylan Stewart. The 'Dons fell in game two 12-6.

The Mastodons picked up the win in the ninth after Youngstown State tied it up in the top half of the inning.
The 'Dons opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first. The crooked number was highlighted by a two-run homer from Cade Fitzpatrick.
The Mastodons held the lead until the eighth when the Penguins went up 4-3 thanks to a two-out two-run home run by Andre Good.
Purdue Fort Wayne responded in the bottom of the eighth with four runs to go up 7-4. Garrett Maish had a key two-run single. However, Youngstown State rallied to tie it at seven. It could have been worse, however, but Braxton Wilson was able to strand the bases loaded to end the frame. Keeping the game tied paid dividends. In the ninth, Dylan Stewart opened the inning with a walk. He was at second with two outs when Higgins hit a grounder up the middle. Higgins hustled down the line and beat the throw to first. As this went on, Stewart hustled around third to score the winning run.
Fitzpatrick went 2-for-4 in the game with a home run and three RBIs. Junior Jarrett Bickel furnished a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a leadoff home run in the eighth to tie the game at four.
Wilson (1-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Purdue Fort Wayne. Sophomore Mitchell Spencer earned a no-decision, but was strong once again. He threw five innings, giving up two runs, all earned, on five hits, with three walks and five strikeouts.

The Mastodons slammed four home runs in game two. Fitzpatrick hit two home runs in the game to finish with three home runs on the day. Braeden Blackford added to Fitzpatrick's power-hitting performance by going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Junior Ben Higgins also chipped in for the Mastodons, going 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.
The Mastodons were trailing 1-0 in the second inning when Blackford put Purdue Fort Wayne on the board with a leadoff home run off junior Matt Brosky.
The Penguins broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the fourth inning, when the Mastodons got back on the scoreboard. Blackford's run-scoring single highlighted the inning where the 'Dons scored a pair, which brought the score to 6-3 in favor of the Penguins.
Senior Justin Miller (0-5) started and took the loss for Purdue Fort Wayne. Brendan Reid was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 2.1 shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking two and striking out two.
