JD Deany Goes the Distance to Help ‘Dons Split at UIC

CHICAGO – Purdue Fort Wayne earned a road split on Sunday (May 8) at UIC in Horizon League baseball action. The Mastodons won game one 3-2 and fell in the second contest 11-6.
The 'Dons picked up their 10th league win of the season. They will head into next weekend with a pair of doubleheaders. They will be the Mastodons' final league games of the season as the 'Dons have a bye in league play in the final week of the regular season.
GAME 1 | Purdue Fort Wayne 3, UIC 2
The Mastodons never trailed in the opener, scoring all three of their runs in the first inning of the contest scheduled for seven innings.
The three runs were enough for starter JD Deany. He is now 4-2 with his first career complete game. He gave up two runs on four hits, allowing three walks and striking out three. Both UIC runs came in the second inning. UIC had a chance to score more in the second, but Deany got Bobby Grines to line into a double play to end the frame. The Flames wouldn't advance a runner to third the rest of the way. Deany picked off a UIC runner at first to end the fifth inning.
The 'Dons opened the game with three consecutive singles. Ben Higgins knocked in Jarrett Bickel with one of the singles. Jack Lang scored on a passed ball and Cade Fitzpatrick used a sacrifice fly to score Higgins. Purdue Fort Wayne benefited from a pair of wild pitches in addition to the passed ball in the inning. UIC's Cristian Lopez would settle down enough to go 2.1 innings. He received the loss. Joey Morris went the final 4.2 innings, giving up just two hits to the 'Dons.
Higgins, Bickel and Lang all went 2-for-4 in the contest. Garett Lake went 2-for-2 with a hit by pitch and a stolen base.

The 'Dons went up early in game two but couldn't hold on.
Mitchell Spencer (3-3) came out of the bullpen for Purdue Fort Wayne and took the loss. He came in after starter Jacob Myer left after 4.2 innings. Myer gave up four runs, but only two were earned.
Lang had four hits including a two-run first inning home run and three RBIs. Higgins went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Fitzpatrick put together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk.
The Mastodons got the scoring started early with Lang's bomb two batters into the game with Jarrett Bickel aboard. Lang now has nine home runs on the season.
The Flames scored one in the first before the 'Dons scored two in the second on a single from Higgins scored Fitzpatrick and Cade Nelis. It brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Mastodons.
UIC fired back to even the ballgame at four before Purdue Fort Wayne reclaimed a 6-4 advantage in the sixth inning. The Mastodons scored two runs when a single from Lang knocked in Nelis. Isaiah Hart came around on a throwing error on the same play.
The game changed in the sixth when UIC scored five times. They recorded eight consecutive hits in the inning.
