CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The baseball team scored a run in the top of the second inning, but Southeast Missouri answered and then poured in at least one run in four straight innings earning the 7-1 victory.
Carter DeBoe continued to swing a hot bat early in the 2012 season. DeBoe led the Mastodons with a 2-for-4 performance from the plate. Daren Boss, Malcolm White and Kristian Gayday also recorded hits on Friday at Capaha Field.
White reached base after ball four to begin the second inning. A single up the middle from Gayday advanced him to second. Another SEMO walk advanced both runners and the Mastodons scored their lone run of the game after Cody O'Neal drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Southeast Missouri State tied the game in the bottom of the second and slowly increased the lead inning-by-inning. They scored one run in the fourth and fifth inning, followed by two in the sixth and seventh.
Charles Weaver was handed his first loss of the year on the hill for IPFW. Weaver gave up five earned runs off eight hits. He struck out four and walked two. Kyle Sorensen came in for the seventh inning. He surrendered two earned runs off three hits, and Drew Overman was the final Mastodon to see action as he came in from the pen to throw the eighth.
IPFW will get a second chance at Southeast Missouri as the two clubs play again tomorrow at 1 p.m.
