CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- The IPFW baseball team scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn a 6-4 victory over Southeast Missouri State on Saturday afternoon. The 'Dons are now 2-3 overall early in the 2012 season.
Malcolm White led the charge for IPFW going 2-for-3 against the Redhawks. Shane Trevino and Daren Boss also played a large part in the win. Boss went 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Trevino cleared the bases with his lone hit of the day.
Jason Kalber improved to 2-0 on the mound for the Mastodons. Kalber struck out a season-high eight batters in just over six innings of work. Travis Reboulet came in for the save. Reboulet struck out two batters and limited the Redhawks to just two hits down the stretch.
Both pitchers dialed in early as Southeast Missouri struck out the first three batters of the game. Jason Kalber responded with two strikeouts in the bottom of the first inning keeping the game scoreless.
Malcolm White got the first hit of the game with a single through the left side of the infield. He advanced into scoring position with one out in the inning, after a wild pitch from Shae Simmons. Steve Danielak reached first base after a solid at bat. The first pitch missed the zone, and Danielak would then foul off three straight. Three of the next four throws would miss the mark as Danielak drew the walk. IPFW left two men on base in the top of the second after a groundball double play ended the inning.
Derek Gibson got things rolling offensively for the Redhawks. He hit a triple to left center field in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jason Blum followed in the lineup and delivered an RBI single to right field for the game's first run of the game.
Southeast Missouri made a pitching change to begin the seventh inning and IPFW took advantage of Simmons leaving the hill by posting six runs. Michael Patman entered the game from the bullpen and walked the bases loaded. He was quickly replaced by Trevor Kill.
Shane Trevino cleared the bases with a single to the right side. He was able to advance to third after an error by the right fielder. Clay Hathaway came to the dish with two outs in the inning. He got on base after being hit on a 2-1 count. Hathaway moved to second after a balk. The balk allowed Trevino to score.
Senior Daren Boss kept the inning alive with an RBI double to center field. DeBoe went to first on a walk, and then White came up with an RBI single to right center field. Boss crossed the plate making the score 6-1 with DeBoe on third and White on first. The inning ended with White being picked off.
The action didn't stop in the seventh as the Redhawks cut the lead to 6-4 after a three-run bomb from Blum. Cody Spanberger hit a one-out single to right field and a Gibson single brought Blum to the plate. Blum was down in the count 1-2, but he found his pitch to record the big home run.
No runs were scored during the eighth or ninth inning although Southeast Missouri made it interesting late. The Redhawks had two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but Reboulet prevailed to earn the save.
Sunday's game will end the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
