NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- IPFW scored the first run of the game against Notre Dame on Wednesday night, but the Fighting Irish came battling back to record their 12th win of the season. With the loss, the Mastodons drop to 4-14 on the year.
Notre Dame scored three runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh to secure the win. They came up with single runs in the second and fifth to reach eight runs. IPFW was limited to just one run, yet their defense turned four double plays on Wednesday afternoon.
Steve Danielak had a great individual performance from the plate for the Mastodons. Danielak went 3-for-4 as the designated hitter. Daren Boss, Carter DeBoe, Kristian Gayday and Caleb Fenimore rounded out the offensive production for the 'Dons.
IPFW got off to a great start as they pushed across one run in the top of the first inning. Clay Hathaway worked the count as the leadoff batter and eventually reached first after being hit by a pitch. Daren Boss joined Hathaway on the base paths as he was walked.
Carter DeBoe came to the plate batting third for the Mastodons on Wednesday night. DeBoe hit a hard line drive to first base with two runners on. Trey Mancini got the tip of this glove on the ball, but the hit ended up being an RBI single as Hathaway came around to score with the ball ending up in right field.
Malcolm White recorded the first out of the inning after he popped up to the first baseman. Out number two came soon after as DeBoe was caught trying to steal second with Boss standing on third. A groundout back to the mound by Shane Trevino would end the inning, but the 'Dons would grab the early 1-0 lead.
The bottom of the first inning was also full of action. After a leadoff walk, Frank DeSico lined into a double play. Kristian Gayday caught a line drive and quickly got the ball back to first base to execute the second out. Notre Dame would go on to load the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Daniel Tursell would dial in to strikeout Tommy Chase to end the inning.
IPFW came up with their second hit of the game in the top of the second inning, but it was not enough to generate a run. The bottom of the second was much like the first for Tursell and the Mastodons. The left-handed pitcher got two early outs, but he couldn't keep the Irish off the base paths as the third batter of the inning walked. A single from Conor Biggio put two on with two out and DeSico made Tursell pay with an RBI single to right field. Both runners were moving on the pitch as DeSico's hit came with a full count. Tursell would leave two men on base as he got Eric Jagielo to fly out to end the inning.
IPFW put two runners on base in the top of the fourth inning. Gayday singled back up the middle of the field and he moved to second base after a Trevino single to left center. Patrick Veerkamp would get out of trouble by recording back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
Notre Dame took the momentum into the bottom of the inning as Charlie Markson recorded his first double of the season. Markson moved to third base after a deep flyout from Biggio. DeSico broke the tie with a two-run single, sending McMurray and Markson to the dish. Jagielo put another run on the scoreboard with an RBI double to deep centerfield. After four complete innings it was Notre Dame leading 4-1.
The Irish recorded another double to start off the bottom of the fifth. Alex Carter ripped a shot down the left field line. Carter went on to score the fifth run of the game for Notre Dame after a single from Biggio. Tursell would exit the game with two outs in the bottom of five. He was replaced by Kevin Kimball. Tursell surrendered eight hits and issued seven walks. Four of his five runs allowed were earned and he struck out one.
Biggio added an RBI single to the box score in the bottom of the seventh inning. He stole second base with McMurray already standing on third. DeSico pushed the lead to 8-1 with a two RBI double that made the chalk fly on the left field side.
IPFW will continue to play as the visiting team with a three-game series next up on the schedule against the Michigan Wolverines.
