Evansville Box Score
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team is now 2-7 overall after taking losses to Eastern Illinois and Evansville on Saturday afternoon. Game one featured the Mastodons playing Eastern Illinois. The Panthers struck late winning by the final score of 8-2. Game two was more of the same as the Purple Aces finished strong earning a 9-1 win over IPFW.
Eastern Illinois scored one run in the fifth inning, two in both the sixth and seventh and finished with a three-run eighth to earn their third win of the season. The Mastodons avoided the shutout by scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth and ninth inning.
Malcolm White and Shane Trevino each went 2-for-4 against the Panthers. Trevino led off the eighth inning with a double to right center field. He scored the first run of the game for IPFW off a groundout from Lucas Salerno. Another double led off the ninth inning as Carter DeBoe also found room to right center field. Trevino hit an RBI single sending DeBoe to the plate for the 'Dons final run of the game.
Jason Kalber tasted defeat for the first time this season against Eastern Illinois. Kalber threw seven innings and allowed five earned runs. He didn't issue a walk and still struck out five batters. Kevin Kimball and Drew Overman each got some action against the Panthers. Kimball struck out two batters in his inning of work, while Overman didn't allow a hit.
IPFW was limited to just two hits in game two of the doubleheader. They fought Evansville to a scoreless draw up until the sixth inning. The Purple Aces broke the tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. They increased their lead with three more runs in the seventh, and took full control of the game with three more in the eighth.
Cody O'Neal and Shane Trevino picked up the lone hits of the night for IPFW. Kristian Gayday crossed the plate for the only run of the game for the Mastodons. Trevino continued to swing a hot bat as he came up with his fourth double of the season in the top of the seventh inning. The double moved Gayday into scoring position and the sophomore scored on a passed ball with Steve Danielak at the plate.
Travis Reboulet dropped to 0-2 on the year for IPFW. Reboulet spent the first six innings on the hill for the 'Dons. He struck out five while allowing three earned runs. Nathaniel White, Kyle Sorensen and Daniel Tursell all saw action out of the bullpen.
IPFW will return to action this upcoming weekend with a four-game series against the Butler Bulldogs. Game one is scheduled for Friday, March 9 at 3 p.m.
