INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team led for much of the game on Friday afternoon, but a late Butler rally gave the Bulldogs a 6-4 victory. Daren Boss and Carter DeBoe each ended the game 2-for-3 from the plate for the Mastodons.
IPFW scored a single run in the first, third, fourth and ninth inning. The turning point in Friday's game came in the bottom of the seventh as Butler posted three runs off a base-clearing double. IPFW made it interesting in the ninth, but they were held to one run which gave Butler their fifth win of the season.
IPFW got off to a good start as the Mastodons recorded two doubles in the top of the first inning. Carter DeBoe sparked the offense with a double to right field. The hit moved Daren Boss to third base. Boss scored the first run of the game after a Malcolm White double down the left field line. Good pitching capped off a solid first inning as Charles Weaver came up with two strikeouts on the mound for the 'Dons.
Butler tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Radley Haddad led off with a double down the right field line. He advanced to third on a passed ball and scored after a plate appearance from Jimmy Risi.
Each team put a run on the scoreboard in the third. Clay Hathaway used his speed to lead off the inning with a bunt single. He would go on to score the lone run of the inning after a fielding error by Mike Hernandez.
IPFW grabbed a 3-2 lead after another run scored in the top of the fourth. Three Mastodons were hit by a pitch in the inning. Jordan Hoeing scored after DeBoe was hit. Brian Padove entered the game for Butler after the hit batter streak from Hernandez. Padove got out of the inning after a groundout by Shane Trevino.
Butler scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Risi walked to start the inning and then two singles loaded the bases. Pat Gelwicks came up with the hit of the day as he crushed a three-run double to right centerfield. That hit would prove to be the difference maker as the Bulldogs held on for the win.
Charles Weaver was tagged with the loss on the mound for IPFW. Weaver threw seven innings on Friday and recorded 11 strikeouts. Steve Danielak came in for the final inning. He struck out one.
The Mastodons will return to Bulldog Park tomorrow for a doubleheader. Game one will begin at 1 p.m.
