Dayton Defeats IPFW in Midweek Matchup

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW three-game winning streak came to a halt on Tuesday afternoon as the Dayton Flyers defeated the Mastodons 15-2 in just seven innings. Caleb Fenimore led IPFW with a 2-for-2 performance from the plate.
The Flyers scored five runs in the first and jumped out to an 8-0 lead after adding three more in the second. C.J. Gillman put the Mastodons away with a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning as the Flyers won their 12th game of the 2012 season.
IPFW (8-18) scored their first run of the game in the fourth inning. Shane Trevino hit a two-out single and advanced to second base off a throwing error by the Dayton shortstop. Kristian Gayday picked up an RBI single to left field sending Trevino to the dish.
The second IPFW run was scored in the bottom of the seventh inning. Markus Kalber led off the inning as a pinch hitter for Gayday. Kalber hit a double down the left field line to get the inning started. Jim Hurt lost control on the mound for Dayton and walked three straight batters after recording two strikeouts. Daren Boss drew the walk that sent Kalber home making the score 15-2.
Danny Tursell, Kevin Kimball and Nate White all spent time on the mound for IPFW. Tursell threw the first two innings and was replaced by Kimball in the third. Kimball threw three innings, leaving White to throw the final two. White recorded two strikeouts in his two innings of work. Tursell took the loss for the 'Dons.
IPFW will prepare for the beginning of the Summit League schedule this weekend as they host South Dakota State in a four-game series. Game one will be held on Friday, April 6 at 3 p.m.
