Box Score
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The IPFW baseball team was defeated by Southern Illinois on Thursday afternoon at Abe Martin Field by the final score of 8-0. IPFW drops to 16-38 overall while the Salukis improve to 26-27.
Left-handed pitcher Cody Forsythe played a large role in the win over IPFW. The Southern Illinois ace tied his career-high strikeout total with 11 against the 'Dons, as he limited IPFW to just two hits in his six innings of work. Matt Murphy also pitched for the Salukis on Thursday and threw the final three innings allowing two hits down the stretch.
Mike Mugg recorded the first hit of the game for IPFW in the top of the third inning, where he led off with a single to left center field. The only other hit allowed with Forsythe on the hill was when Markus Kalber led off the inning with a standup double in the top of the sixth.
Kristian Gayday and Daren Boss were the other two Mastodons to record hits against Southern Illinois. Boss singled in the top of the seventh inning after the SIU pitching change, and Gayday followed in the order with a single to center field. A promising start to the inning didn't end well as both runners ended up stranded.
The Mastodons started Chuck Weaver against the Salukis on Thursday. The IPFW ace threw 5.1 innings which resulted in six earned runs off nine hits striking out five, but issued seven walks.
Kyle Sorensen and Nate White were also in action against SIU. Sorensen came in for Weaver to throw 2.1 innings, surrendering three hits resulting in two runs for the Salukis. Only one of the two runs was earned. White came in after Sorensen walked his fourth batter of the day. He walked in a run, but got the 'Dons out of the inning with a groundout to Clay Hathaway.
IPFW will return to action with a rematch against the Salukis tomorrow at Abe Martin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
